Good afternoon:wave::wave:
I am new to posting on this thread I am at present unemployed (1st day) but been off work for about 6 weeks
I have started decluttering and love this thread. I used to read the OS thread when GQ had fray bentos pies under the bed but went back to work that summer. Love the way she writes, Its very witty and clever
I have folded clothes that fit and gifted stuff to the CS that I will never wear I have bags of stuff for the foodbank that DH was going to take a few months ago. They have moved and I can now take them myself of an evening
This is long post for me but will drop by with a hello regularly
Take care0 -
Nice to have you with us. I now keep the FB pies elsewhere and under-the-bed is for other tinned goods plus cartons of passata.:)

I and the old man were having a discussion about the title “Making History” I know it as a novel by Stephen Fry whereas he thought it was a play by Brian Friel.
A quick Google and we discovered we were both right. I said to him. “Well I knew I was a right, because I have the book” and he responded “I knew I was right because I have a copy of the play” At no point did it occur to either of us, to go and get the hard copy. Probably because we knew it would take forever to find them.
Ironically when I googled it, I used my Kindle Fire.
We really don’t need so many books, if we can’t even be bothered to find them to prove a point.
Cheers all

I've been meaning to ask, how do you reconcile KM with prepping? Do they not feel like polar opposites? Or can you be a minimal prepper? I did read the SHTF thread with interest and learned a lot, but decided not to go too far down the road - I think my need for space over-ruled my need to stash IYSWIM.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. VJsMum, the current price for a full sovreign if it's been damaged by being in a mount and thus not fit for investment is £170 for scrappage - saw one bought for this purpose on Saturday. Unless yours is a half-sov (same but smaller) they're giving you a lousy deal. Full-size sovriegns in good nick are commanding £200 today. If your one is a half-sov it's a good price.
A full sovreign weighs 7.98g and is 22ct gold and is 22.05 mm across.
ETA Doh! Just re-read your post and you did say half-sov, my fault for speed reading. I'll leave the post up in case it'll be of interest to anyone else, tho.
Thanks - yes it is a half. I did think about keeping it - in SHTF style - but decided it would potentially get lost and my auntie was so full of life that i really want to commemorate that by wearing the jewelry (how do you spell jewellery???) and doing something lovely with the gold rather than just return it to a drawer. She also left me a small (in relative terms) amount of money. We did buy a little something with some of it but the remainder went into our account and every time we went out and had the dearer bottle of wine, or a meal unexpectedly, or went to a show that we hadn't planned on, we would say "we can spend Barb's money" - we probably spent Barb's money 5 times over before we stopped saying it :rotfl:. But Barb was larger than life, a pub landlady with a laugh that would stop you in your tracks and could outswear a trooper and would so approve of us spending her money to have that little bit more than we would normally have paid for. A better legacy than stuff, surely?

It's interesting, isn't it? I am a prepper, not to the extent of having an underground bunker or firearms (well, I do have a bow and arrows in my bedroom but I classify archery as a hobby not a prep). I have camping gear, but I do go camping, so it's not sitting there mouldering pending the arrival of the apocalypse.:rotfl:
Prepping could easily devolve into hoarding, I think, if you weren't careful. I guess my dividing line is that what I have, I use, I just shop from the stores and then replenish the stores. It isn't special stuff which doesn't get used for anything else and just sits there taking up space and being wasted. I'm effectively running a larger inventory than is necessary for day to day consumption, but I do benefit from stocking up when I can see a good price. In the early 1990s I was spending £10-£15 a week on food, and I spend no more than that now, due to extreme wiliness. No point in getting older if you don't get more devious, IMO.
I don't take everything in her book as gospel, for instance I also go my own way on paperwork. Having had the personal and workplace experiences that I've had, in this employment and previous ones, I know TPTB can spring sudden surprises on Jo Q Public, like demanding the repayment of tens of thousands of pounds of alleged overpayment of benefits from someone (or someone's estate via the executor). In those cases, who has the most paperwork is usually the one who 'wins'.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

HI all, haven't been posting on this thread but just wanted to say that I kondo'd mine and kids' clothes over three months ago and the system is still in place - all folded on end in most drawers, socks and knickers folded, tights rolled and so much easier to work with!
