The KonMarie method

Apologies for bursting in mid flow (so to speak) but I started the thread yesterday and have only got to page 45 so far. I am doing my day job..honestly.
So I started samosa-ing, and then I did my knicker drawer and now I'm onto tops....and that's how it starts, isn't it. I only found the thread because people kept mentioning Kondo-ing in their diaries and I wanted to know what it was...some are Kondo, some achieve Kondo and some of us wade right into the middle of Kondo (obviously we would never 'thrust Kondo upon' someone)! So what I'm wondering is, WHY does this feel like something I WANT to do when all my other attempts at finally getting sorted have failed?
I have been so inspired and entertained by the thread and wanted to say thank you to all of you.LD 12.25 £1600.00/£0700.00 Fn £274.00 LTFn £525 LLTFn £300

Because you can - it's doable, it stays done, it gives you permission when all other methods didn't seem to?
I guess it just makes sense.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Hi all
Had to come on and reply to some posts, I'm nodding along so much at the moment!
GreyQueen's descriptions of her PB and RB remind me of a book I'm reading, The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Chimp-Paradox-Management-Confidence/dp/009193558X
He has called the primitive brain the Chimp, and the rational brain the Human, and he discusses how we, as Humans, can manage and train our Chimps. The paradox is that we need our Chimp, our instinctive reactions, to deal with life-or-death situations/threats - but the Chimp sees so many threats in everyday modern life that it needs managing and calming down. Unfortunately for us, every input into our brain goes to the Chimp first, so it's an ongoing battle for supremacy between Human and Chimp.
I'm finding it really useful along with the Kondoing.
I also have the thing about my childhood clothes being old-fashioned and home-made when compared to my peers. I dealt with it for years, once I had control over my attire, (!) by living in jeans and Tshirts, which still make up a large part of my wardrobe. I've always struggled with 'dressing up', but it's becoming less of an issue now because, in my 50s, I care so much less about what people think! So I wear the ubiquitous jeans to work as I have a messy job, and I have a few nice clothes for going out, meeting friends etc., and I wear trainers or Converse because my orthotics fit in them, and I have 1 pair of heeled ankle boots which I can cope with because they're lace-ups but I still wouldn't walk far in them!
Another vote here for Bravissimo bras, I'd been wearing 34C and am so much more comfy in properly-fitted 30DD!
They are expensive though, thanks for the tip about the Bay of E, I hadn't thought of looking on there
VJsMum gosh how wasteful! I thought it was only 'celebs' that did that, and don't they borrow the clothes for big 'dos'? And the posh jewellery?
june89 love the pics! :T

Snorkypants-if you've already signed up for Gift Aid with Oxfam but have lost your number just give them your name and postcode when you take in your donation.
If anyone does have clothes that they think are not fit to sell -most charity shops have a rag or recycling collection so it's worth checking.0 -

Thanks Thirzah, I've emailed them to check, I told them my new address when we moved and have never heard from them again so I want to be sure my account still exists/is at the right address. I'm planning on collecting the Nectar points.0 -
I was going to say the same thing about rags - my CS said they make quite a lot of money from them!
I recognise that my decluttering has been held back in the past because I hate putting stuff in landfill, but sometimes - when there's no obvious recycling option and Freecycle/Freegle doesn't produce any takers - it's the only option, better that it's at the tip (where they do recycle a lot of stuff e.g. metal, wood) than sitting in my home. The issue is for me to get rid of it, not to determine its eventual home.
Re the Chimp Paradox - there's a great Ted Talk here from Steve Peters, I haven't read the book but I want to now!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
Rosyq - you beat me to it - was thinking precisely the same about Chimp Paradox when I read GQ's post!
Fabulous theory which I am still working on implementing in all parts of my life.
June, I think I have a bit of an obsession with decluttering videos on youtube - some people have crazy amounts of stuff.
And amazingly still have so much carp even after the clearout. They need introducing to MK!
One woman I saw got rid of loads of makeup, clothes etc. I was really impressed. However in recent videos she's been showing off what she's bought and you can see the clutter creeping back in. I don't have a YT account but I feel I should sign up just so I can suggest MK and save her from junk!
Your drawer looks lovely and neat, I wish mine were as tidy! Still a work in progress.

Morning all.
With such sterling recommendations, I have just gone on the library website and reserved The Chimp Paradox, which I will hope to get my paws on in the next few weeks. Sounds like a fascinating read. It'll probably bore PB witless but she can go take a nap whilst I get on with some headshrinkage.
Walked into my sitting-room this morning and it looked, in a hard to quantify way, emptier. It's not that I have removed furniture, as what is there is pretty minimal. It's just that there is less visual busyness on certain surfaces and no stuff on the floor.
I am also noticing the phenomenon which KM refers to in her book, where the spaces to keep certain things become obvious. It's not that I wander around my small flat holding X,Y or Z item in my hand, thinking where can I put you? because if it was that obvious, it would be there already. It's more a case that a sudden LBM happens and the new home for a floating item presents itself, like the flip-flop mules which I slip into to go out to the bins etc, which formerly lived on the floor of the 75 cm wide hall, and now have found a place on the floor of the water tank cupboard. If it floods in there, they won't take any harm from a wetting, and they're out of sight and out from underfoot.
Am also finding it a lot easier to put things away when I come in, and deal with them, and then have them ready for the next workday/ session/ whatever. It's amazing how efficient this efficiency business is.:DEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Not many shoe factories left, but a few in the area - expensive mens, even at discount price (£120+!!!!!) but v good quality. There is also a handbag shop that I've had therapy to block from my mind. Damn, now you've reminded me :rotfl:.
