The KonMarie method

  • I too found paperwork emotionally draining, and in fact it's brought me to a halt (partly the sheer volume) but I'm going to get back on track tonight as I'm determined to move on to some more enjoyable categories. I started paperwork earlier than MK suggests because I needed to sort some stuff out, but it hasn't been easy.

If it's possible, can you burn some of this stuff - I don't know if you have an open fire or just a garden incinerator? I shredded most things but a few particularly painful items were fed into my woodstove with a little bit of ceremony, I found that helped!

As far as disposing of confidential papers goes, I've found a very good way (if you have a garden or even big patio pots) is to shred the papers and then either mix the shreddings into the compost heap, or use them as part of the "filling" for big pots or raised beds. I put the shredded paper at the bottom up to one third full, then the soil or compost mix on top.

The paper helps to hold moisture (use under runner or French beans, too), and within a season will be rotted down.

I have done this over time as I've had papers to dispose of, including heaps from my late parents, so I would definitely call it tried and tested.

The only thing I wouldn't put in is highly coloured or coated papers as I'm not sure about the chemicals, but that sort of paper doesn't tend to be used for confidential documents.

Alternatively, if you have pets, use the confidential papers to wrap rabbit or guinea pig soiled bedding or cat litter trays, (I woudn't use them as bedding because of the ink and other chemicals). If you have a dog which does its business in the garden, you can get rid of small quantities of paper (e.g torn off pieces containing name/address/reference number) in the dog poo bag.

    Dreadful sin to confess...
I have ....... put away my winter clothes on the top shelf of the wardrobe

I'm going to do this, as my house is unheated and I need masses of layers in winter. ;)

    Hi Choose wisely
I to retired 17months ago. I too had been bullied in a role.

I came across diaries and 'evidence' of my time that I was a victim of bullying. I found it so distressing, the old feelings flooding back.

I've found myself in worse situations in life whereupon my strength of character got me through. However this bully was so subtle and passive and unfair, it had me rock bottom. Getting rid of these papers was very cathartic for me too.

I worked with some lovely people but this low life spoiled that.
She has had her comeuppance I hear. It's about their low self esteem not yours.

I am happy now all is well.

    Ditto, Jinny and Choose wisely.

I've lived in a grey area for the past 8 years, gazing on a future of just getting older and more decrepit. MK has helped me over the stile into a really happy state now. The future looks bright, inviting and full of opportunities. The past is just that - the past.

    Into the present!

Yesterday, I discarded another half sack from the 'maybe' pile of clothes, after chores, grocery shopping and a treat - a sandwich lunch out.

Then, I tackled my shoes (stored, boxed, on a wardrobe shelf)... only 14 pairs, not many by today's standards, apparently. To repeat what has often been said: DO NOT SAVE ANYTHING 'FOR BEST'!

There are 8 pairs of boots and shoes that are brand new or worn once and they are now all too small! (Thanks, pregnancies and menopause!) Two pairs of barely worn espadrilles, also too small, had 'died in storage' - foxed. (R.I.P.) Two pairs of ballerinas (:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:) may be too uncomfortable in wear! :(

I did discover a lovely pair of BN courts (unworn) that I had impulsively bought a size too large, which will now be my smart pair! :T

So now I need to get ebaying and chazzering.

Today, I have to supply one of my daughters with researched advice about planting a woodland area in her big garden. :exclamati

Then I shall be packing up all my (already sorted,) unneeded bed linen for the CS, and the towels for the local kennels. I shall also consider the best place to store my winter clothes. Thanks luxor4t, a rebel like me! :)

Bras: I have worn the same make and model for about 15 years. They are also expensive, but about a third of mine have come from eBay. Although listed as used, they come from sellers who 'have lost/put on weight' or 'bought the wrong size' and are immaculate. Some still had the labels, and were less than half the RRP. I've never been disappointed.
    Needs, NOT wants!
No food waste since November 2010. :j
    No debts.

Been enjoying reading all your posts.
Still no Kondoing here because still not well.
Went to docs on Monday and found out the reason I've felt rough for 2 weeks is because I've got tonsillitis. On antibiotics now and infection on tonsils is starting to clear up finally.
All I've managed to do in almost a fortnight is samosa a few carrier bags.
    Pitiful.
I will get there and join you all soon.

    Feel better Clutterfree!

Not much Kondoing this week, have been in an organising phase. But I have access to a car this weekend and with the weather forecast looking pretty miserable, have full intentions of getting stuck in and making many trips to CS/RC.

I took a box of pictures (the ones which were liberated from the storage unit last week) to the charity shop today, with a couple of other bags of oddments - luckily our town is not short of the odd charity shop (even though many others have closed :( ).

I am about to go for a week's holiday (first holiday since 2010!) and have just packed my suitcase in 5 minutes :j . Because I could see all my KonMarie-folded clothes, selecting them was a breeze, they just lifted out of the drawer and flew into the case ready folded.

(Usually it's a job which would take ages of agonising over what to take, and folding and re-folding things to fit into the case.)

This method just keeps on giving, I'm :j :j :j.

    :) It's strangely satisfying, isn't it?

Me and PB are having a fight for control of our mutual body. The Great Shampoo Wars, version 2.0.

PB We don't have to be anywhere in a hurry after work on a Thursday so, when we've been to the central library to return that book, we can go up
Street and compare prices of shampoo at the cheap shops at the other end.

HB; I've done that already and got best value. No need to go again until the litre bottle at home runs out, then it'll just take a couple of mins to get it when we're next passing.

PB (deviously wheedling) But there might have been a better deal appearing since you last looked. We should check it out just in case and then if you see a good price, we can buy a bottle. We could buy two bottles, we can afford to, and one can go in the cupboard for later. That will save time later on, and you think that's a Good Thing, I can hear you thinking things like that, don't forget. It's Efficient. You like that idea; efficiency is good and Grown Up. We should do that now.

HB; Nope. Not gonna do that. I'm trying to train you to be less anxious about Running Out of Stuff. So we're practising it on something non-essential. I wouldn't risk it with teabags, but I can force the issue with shampoo.

PB; 'S'not working. I AM anxious. I don't think that bottle will last into May. It might only last until the end of April. And then there's the Bank Holiday, we mightn't be able to get a new bottle. It's too risky.

HB; Take a chill pill, sweetheart. Even if we run into the Bank Holiday Monday, shops only close for one day and shampoo won't cease to exist. All will be well. Relax.

Exerunt PB, face like thundercloud, winding up for a full-on heel-drumming shrieking temper tantrum. HB retires with a grin to put the kettle on.:rotfl:
