Thank you lostinrates that would be ideal for my wardrobe. I have more hanging space now, so it will fit in.

I haven't posted much but I am reading the thread and the book. Today I kondoed my sewing basket. It's old, I inherited it from a great aunt. I don't really like it, it's a bit smelly and falling to bits. So I took a deep breath, thanked it, and sent it on its way to sewing basket heaven.
I did keep all the useable items, the boys wanted to eBay the tobacco tins some items were kept in. I've kept them (for now) I've put everything into a lovely storage box I already had. The buttons, I've put into a frosted glass jar that had some rather expensive bath salts in. The jar smells of lavender, it's gorgeous.

I also sorted out my nan's knitting needle bag. I've paired up the needles, thanked the odd ones and the ones with no size marker on them. I've decided to treat myself (and the needles) to a new bag. I recently started knitting again, so I'd like a bag that brings me joy.

DH and I went to various places first thing to get rid of items thanked for their service. My small car boot and the back seat was full. I now have another black bag full of stuff to go. I decided to sort the drawers under my side of the bed (DH's side contains photos and sentimental stuff, so will be done last) I thought these drawers had been done when I put christmas stuff away. How wrong was I, with my kondo head on out went a bag full of stuff. I did keep my money saving head on though, I still have gift bags and wrapping paper for the year. I just got rid of gift bags that really were past their best.

So a very busy day. The house is feeling lighter, but really need DH to sort out books, DVDs and CDs. I've done mine and have a pile that amazon will accept, the rest are going to the charity shop. Just keeping my favourites.

Have a lovely evening, will probably pop back on later.

Just make sure you get the matching little drawers. Without them its much less suitable. With them I feel a little warmth for previously reviled ikea as they must have unsterstood the shoe box storage idea years ago.

In fact, that I have had three in these for use for so many years suggested I did at some point ....just lost the way.

Currently mine house, that I can remember, night wear ( three shoeboxes divided into suitable for husband, suitable for doctor and suitable for suitable for slumming it round the house in) swimwear, scarves , beach dresses, shorts, grown underwear like shape wear and slips for under clingy clothes of various shapes. ( as opposed to daily knickers and bras etc which are in a drawer with dh's ). Hosiery, thermals, um....cannot remember what else......

I'm never going to have a capsule wardrobe. Its not going to suit my lifestyle. But it is nice sorting stuff out again.

I too have huge bags of stuff I've been hanging on to. I've also chucked out stuff that gives me 'joy' or comfort which I mistake for joy. A beautiful delicately wispy light cardi, easy to slip on with dresses or trousers, very feminine, but had a little hole in it. I cannot darn, and if I put it aside to try ( and make a shoddy job of it) I'll continue wearing it and the hole will get bigger and I'll eventually go from wearing in the car to wearing it out some wear.....not good. So temptation is removed. A black dress I must have worn the death out of. Worn the hell out of it, and worn it back again. :). I have to wear it with a belt because I leant on the sink while cleaning it and it has a a it of bleach on it.......that belt hides the bleach. One day the dress will move under the belt. Its gone....

I'm even thinking of trying to dig out the sewing machine. Its been a really long time since I tried, but I can never find the clothes I want....so why aren't I clearing the decks and learning to make them ?

I got up today full on enthusiasm after putting writing down all my thoughts in the early hours.

I've moved the table that was squeezed into one of my little wardrobes into my study/children's playroom and moved my old crib over to the other side of my desk. This meant I could move a bed settee further into the study which makes getting into the room easier.

I have wondered whether to get rid of the bed settee but twice I have had visitors who have used it. The last two house guests ended up staying with me for nearly 6 months - one had the spare room and the other the study. It was difficult at times when I needed things out of each room, but as they were not lodgers, just guests, they couldn't really complain!

The little cupboard which held the table looks better now because I now have room for my basket of handbags in there and the bag containing my gloves, hats and scarves. So glad that they are no longer on the bedroom floor. I've hung the prettiest scarves over the hanging rail in there, from which also hangs 3 umbrellas. I moved my tights from there into one of the little drawers in my narrow chest of drawers and that is better.

I moved all of my clothes from the smaller wardrobe in the spare room into the larger one and as I have another house guest with me I moved her clothes into the smaller one along with her small suitcase and some bags. A box with wrapping paper which was on the floor is now on the shelf above the wardrobe.

All of this is clearing a lot of floor space which will make it easier to hoover and it looks so much better. Still plenty to do though. My apartment is one of the two penthouses and I have a lot of sloping walls which does cause a few problems.

Bet they don't take it back off again though

I use Mr A delivery and they send an amazing amount of bags. Not sure how that will work post Oct but there is no way I am paying 5p for just about everything I buy.

On reflection the bag in the garage is staying and I will just have to crack on with the samosering

You will get a 'tick the box' option - bags or no bags............remember to have shoppers ready to unload your unbagged shopping into though............ errr we have quite a few of the delivery crates with stuff in, in the sheds and we have an empty one or two with we just take to door whilst delivery man gets next crate, then there isnt so much emptying onto kitchen floor to do!

Have done the sideboard in the front room as it is a bit tricky to do some of the other spaces at the moment. OH has been plastering DD bedroom so her stuff - new double bed, new mattress, chest of drawers, bedside cabinet plus clothes and piles of stuff are all in dining room.

However, the plastering is now done so hopefully next weekend it is electrics/painting/skirting boards/etc.

The weekend after might be able to get to doing some finishing off. Then can move the STUFF upstairs and start in the dining room.

He's also just bought himself a Land rover so I thinking big trips to the recycling centre with some furniture. Yay! They have a donation centre for ok stuff.

Just thought it is nearly half term so will have some time to get stuff done. Daughter who loves to organise will also be back from Uni for a bit. Might get loads done. MMmmm but son who likes to hoard will also be here. Will have to think about it.

I can honeslty say buying that book was the best decision I have made in a long time!

I have done everything except photos (and our two sheds)

2 weeks down the line and everything is working well - its still tidy, I am putting stuff away straight away and I am not constantly worrying about the state of my cupboards and drawers.

My dd Kondo'd her wardrboe and lined all her clothes up from heaviest, long sleeved to lightest no sleeves and says its so much easier in the morning to pick what she wants for work.

She realised (after chucking 6 pairs of jeans) that she really wanted a pair from Top Shop but couldnt justify the price....she has now bought them and is delighted but a bit miffed that she probably spent more buying cheaper jeans (and lots of them) that didnt bring her joy.

I have been changing the way I view things too - why put up with something if you can afford to change it to what you want? My small victory over this was my plastic measuring jug collection...sounds daft but I had 11 plastic measuring jugs - I did not like one of them and it was because the see-through markings made it difficult to measure stuff properly. So today I invested in a pyrex style jug from Asda - brand new for £2 - with proper red markings on the side so I can see stuff! So I now only own my new glass one and one small plastic one (that has markings!)

Also while ranger rolling my tea towels I noticed just how manky they were looking - why do I buy white tea towels? I hot wash them and still cant get the marks out.....so again, off to Asda and bought 5 black ones for £5 and put the others in the rag bag.

I am getting oh on board slowly - hes shevling an in-built cupboard to make me a proper airing cupboard so I am going to get rid of the chest of drawers which has been falling to bits for years which contains all my sheets and covers.

I am amazed at how tidy and clean the bathroom has been. I only have at tiny bit of storage under the sink so most of our stuff was lying on the side of the bath (and as Marie knows...it goes slimy) which in turn meant nobody except me cleaned it as they couldnt be bothered to lift stuff up (and I, of course, got rebellious and refused to clean it to make a point!) Now, after sorting it all out, I have a small basket for dds stuff and me and oh get our shower gel/shampoo out, clean and then wipe the bottles and put them back in the cupboard - its now so easy just to run a quick wipe over the surfaces and I have got everyone to agree to do it after their bath.

I am dying to Kondo oh's stuff but am heading our leaders advise and only doing mine and general stuff. I think I will have a fight on my hands when we do the sheds as most of it is his......

And I have made £28 by trading in some books and wii games on Amazon which I had forgotten all about! Score!

  • Had another mini-Kondo today. Decided that the living room lampshade - although perfectly serviceable - did not spark joy so after having modified it(dangly bits taken off) that has gone into DS' room to replace his "outgrown" lampshade which is off to CS. (Onto bag 7 since Kondo-ing commenced.) Now seeking a joy-sparking lampshade for living room - spotted a likely candidate on Argos website.

Encouraged DS to Kondo some old "outgrown" posters in his bedroom - these have been replaced by some new ones that reflect his current interests. I was really impressed with the care he took putting them up. His room looks lovely now.

Photographed, thanked and recycled a big bag of "special" greeting cards that I've been holding onto for some reason. That felt really good. The other day when I came across these I thought I'd never be able to part with them but it actually felt quite easy. Couple of old diaries out too.

Not a lot out today but it was really satisfying.
