Today I have officially started my kondoing journey. I am following the book order rigidly and dutifully started with my clothes, got 2 bin bags for chazza and 1 bin bag to chuck out. My drawers are done just got to sort the 'keep' clothes in the wardrobe now. Tomorrow I will tackle shoes, scarves, belts and bags..onwards and upwards :D

I had kept lots of coat hangers which DH hated even though they were in a couple of carrier bags in the garage. Last week DD asked if I still had them as they would be perfect for the wardrobe in her new house :j

I gave DH a guided tour of the chest of drawers and his first comment on being shown "these are the thick socks for wellies or boots and this drawer is for ordinary socks etc" was "Oh I will use all these thick socks now as I did not know where they were"

I have kondo'd part of our office. Cleared some of the shelves, moved the stationery to be all in one place and have suggested that the now empty bookcase is reassigned elsewhere in the building.

We have too many places that accumulate stuff that no-one knows who it belongs to, what it is and whether we can get rid or not.

Now I'm looking round the room for the next thing I can sort/tidy/get rid of!
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?

Phew, my giant 'keep pile' of clothes is all safely away. I now have a whole spare chest of drawers (only one of those tall skinny ones) as well as two empty wardrobe shelves and another small empty drawer. It's nice to think I have all this space, I might use the empty chest of drawers for my sewing stuff and fabric stash but in the spirit of MK will wait and see what presents itself as needing that space.

My next step is handbags, scarves, accessories, etc. and then clothes are all finished and Im ready to move on....

Anyone have an thoughts on what to do with unopened and unwanted bottles of alcohol. I have a cupboard full of 'hard liquor' that hasn't been touched and everyone we know only drinks beer or wine; given I only ever use the odd splash of sherry or brandy in cooking it's not likely to ever get used in my lifetime

I was thinking I could perhaps donate it for a raffle or something but don't know of anywhere I could take it or what's considered appropriate. I imagine lots of places these days might have a no alcohol policy.

  • I think I have finally finished clothes, shoes, handbags etc. and I am totally horrified by the [STRIKE]pile[/STRIKE] mountain of bags ready to go to the charity shop.

After this was taken, I got OH to go through his stuff and we've added another 4 big bags.

Check out all the now unused coathangers too!

A lot of the stuff was about a decade old, and lots was from eBay or bargain buys in the sales, so I definitely think I've had my money's worth out of most things. There are probably about 10 items still with their tags on though.

Sat and refolded all of OH's clothes so they are now 'filed' upright in his drawers and he's said how good it is to be able to see everything.

Looking forward to tackling kitchen cupboards, utility room and paperwork over the next few weekends.

I did the kitchen today, I sat in the middle of the floor with the contents out of four cupboards all around me. Husband came in and helped by moving a few bits. Then had a moan about getting rid of things that may come in useful. We had four flasks!! Apparently in a few years when he retires they will be handy. We compromised and kept two.
I thought about what I actually use when I cook and took lots of pyrex to the chazza.
I used a full pack of wipes as I cleaned and rearranged cupboards. Its not finished but it looks so much better.
Husband is away next weekend and I fully intend to do a lot more.
He bought me the book, so it would be rude not to learn from it.

Putting stuff in boxes and then putting them on a shelf, up high, behind a wardrobe door is not for me any more.

I've always had things on top of my fridge freezer but I have decided that has to stop. So I took down a empty box which housed some crockery many years ago. a broken tray and a box with medicine in.

I've moved the box of medicine into a half height wardrobe where I store my linens and put it with the first aid box. It makes sense to have all of these things in one place.

I have just one narrow chest of drawers in my bedroom. I have my day to day bras and knickers in the top one, then leggings, swimwear and nightwear, posh bras and knickers, and finally other lingerie in the bottom one. Oh, and a dressing table with small drawers to hold my toiletries.

All tops are in a second half height wardrobe along with trousers, knitwear, skirts and short dresses.

The third one has my boots, shoes, slippers, socks and tights in but also has a folded gate leg table in it! There is nowhere else this could go. It will never be used in this apartment - currently thinking about who might like it. It is a really nice item of furniture.

I have a larger chest of drawers in the second bedroom which is used by visitors. I only use one of those drawers at the moment for my holiday clothes, as the others are used by someone currently staying with me.

In the spare (visitors) bedroom, I have longer dresses and coats in a narrow wardrobe, and a larger one holds my jackets and where the clothes I rarely use are kept, and those I don't fit into. I need to go through them to see if there are any I can throw away.

I have one dress I bought for a wedding, and hated it on the photos, never wore again, but it was expensive! I also have a suit, a jacket with two skirts which I never wore and also was expensive - together over £200 pounds worth, which is ridiculous. I had to order the suit, so I never got to try it on. When I got home I thought I might slim to fit it - but I never did.

I think Marie Kondo says that suitcases should not have things in them. I have 5 suitcases - one contains holiday things, one has a smaller suitcase inside it and these two I use a lot. Also I have a vintage one which I have taken away with me at times, and one broken one. These latter two just store things and they all fit neatly into the bottom of the largest wardrobe. But I rarely get the things out of these two so I need to tackle the contents. One has a foot massager in it - once I clear my excess toiletries from the linen cupboard that would be a good place to put it I think. I might then start to use it, and if not then it can go.

Hmm, I think I still have a long way to go before I am happy with how this place looks

Just remembered I have a box with wrapping paper just stuck in the second bedroom between the chest of drawers and a book case. It should not be there and needs to go back in the wardrobe.

Currently I also have a basket with handbags in and a bag with hats, scarves and gloves in that are just sitting in my bedroom. They need a permanent home. But I cannot think where at the moment.

Sorry about such a long post - I find it easy to think when I am writing things down. I seems I can 'see' problems and solutions easier this way than when I am walking around the rooms. Which is a bit odd really.

Do you have a nursing home near you? Or is a relative staying in one? Where I work we have a bottle stall game on winter/summer fayer days, that is all bottles covered with foil but some are empty the rest are full and its run as a lucky dip but I don't think our home is the only one to play that game.hth
