I'm reading this thread with some interest as I don't understand the appeal of the Annual Holiday. My name is Mercenary and I'm a holiday-phobic  .
I don't drink, I eat to stay alive (I'm not a foodie), l hate being on beaches, I loathe seeing shows. Churches & cities don't interest me much. Scenery-gazing is ok for a very short while but it's called a background for a reason. Strange beds are usually uncomfortable and I don't do well with little sleep. I love reading but 1) I do that at home anyway and 2) There's only so much you can read before needing to do something else.
for me, the best holidays ( approx 4 over the past 20 years) I've had are when I stay with a family member in America and I can basically do what I do at home, but with the added amusement of mixing with American people, observing their different lifestyle and expectations and finding the strange things in their stores.

We go on cruising, so we can be in a different country every day.

Just shows how different we all are!
I don't drink but I absolutely love my food as my waistline will testify! I love cooking and I absolutely love eating.
If you mean theatre shows I absolutely love those. Me and OH go to London to see a show at least 6 to 8 times a year and also go to the local theatre. Also like going to see comedians.
I love cities probably more than countryside but like to have holidays in both if we can afford it. In fact if we won the lottery we would spend money travelling. No big house or flashy car for us - maybe a camper van so we could travel this country and Europe. I really cannot imagine ever getting bored in a city as there is always so much to see and do.
I read at home but on holiday I don't feel guilty that I should be doing some housework or gardening and I don't have the dogs pestering to go for a walk or to play. I can just sit and read and relax although I don't actually spend that much time on holiday reading as there always seems so much more to doThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
There's an awful lot of snobbery about holidays .....Butlins is cheap and low rent apparently ....spoken by someone who hasn't been in recent years and thinks it's all chalets and hi de hi , relaxing on a beach is apparently a sign of less intelligence (maybe acceptable if you have Tolstoy loaded on your kindle though
)
Some people work so hard that a beach holiday is simply a complete change -some people wouldn't choose Butlins as a couple but their kids have such a good time that they enjoy it simply because it makes the kids happy.
I always think that people who have to be !"doing something" every moment on holiday are avoiding actually spending quality one on one time with their family and actually having to talk to them
I like to have stuff to do and see but I also enjoy relaxing with my partner and just having time to talk without one or other of us having to go do one of the million things that demand our time at home. We could do that in a b&b in Britain but actually I'd rather do it on a sun soaked balcony with a fabulous view (last year we did it in Devon and Majorca both fortunately were sunsoaked)
Why do people even CARE what someone else does on holiday ? Do what you enjoy and stop worrying about what the Joneses are doing with their leisure time - it has no impact on your holiday !!I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Haven't been anywhere longer that 2 nights away for 12 yearsI try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
I do cruises and camping. I can't stand lying on a to beach, itching and having nothing else to do
. It took us years and years to find these two options - then my mum went on a cruise and persuaded us to do this "old age crowded type" holiday. It was brilliant, and brilliant for kids. Loads of places to visit, loads of activities, comfort of your own room, balcony. 5 star luxury, honestly. Nothing like how lots of people see it. Loads of youngsters, loads of everything.
The camping is my idea of a fun and very cheap holiday too.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

Lots of variety then
Just saw your post, agreed. Best thing we ever tried, now I'm hooked. I love visiting all the European cities without having to stay or pay extortionate prices for food and accommodation. Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, Florence, Seville, Palma, Monte Carlo. Wish I'd done in years ago xNever again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
We go on self-catering holidays in this country for a fortnight and a week wouldn't be enough. We go to areas like Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Lake District where there is always something to see and do. My idea of holiday hell is lying on the beach doing nothing!Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I think energy flagging is a bit different to feeling that you've had enough of the place and it has nothing more to offer you after 3 days!
I do have to wonder where the OP lives that nowhere else in the world can seem to match up to what it has to offer!0 -
We struggle with holidays. Our youngest who is 5 has learning difficulties and sensory issues so would rather be at home with his cartoons and his own toys. We go to Haven sites as there are a few things for him to do and plenty to keep older 2 occupied and inbetween me and hubby take turns relaxing in caravan with him.Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
