So you're saying its ok to lie to a dealer because a dealer *might* not tell you about / know about faults on the car you buy off them anyway?
I wouldn't expect a dealer to tell me the faults of a car I was buying. That's not a salesman's job.
Therefore I wouldn't expect to tell them the faults of the car I was selling them.

If it was a dealer that I trusted (never found one yet, but you never know) then absolutely I'd tell them.

It is totally the salesmans job to advise you of any known faults that are not going to be sorted as part of the sale. He is legally obliged to tell you under the SOGA.

I think you're just trying to find reasons why its ok to lie to a salesman about the condition of your car.

I remember many years ago, a mate of mine who was a mechanic told me that Peugeot had the reputation of building just about about the best diesel engine going. Loads of other manufacturers used their engine.

Don't know if it's still the case. Interesting though - like I said, my Pug has been brilliant, but I know they do get a generally bad reputation for reliability. Touch wood mine's been fine ( and it's a 1.6 HDi :( ). Why did I buy it ?? I generally have a dim view of French cars !! Was a good price, drove nicely, thought I'd take a punt.

Sure, I'd be driving an Audi, or a Merc, or a Jag, or a Ferrari if funds permitted. Meanwhile, back in the real world .....

Toyota had a huge hand in the 107.

The French petrols have been fine, missus currently has a C3 and apart from the water pump eating teeth off the belt it's been great.

I just don't like the 04+ diesels with DPFs and Eloys fluid.

It was a pleasure to drive, for a bog standard car it had a/c and bluetooth. Easily kept up with mway traffic and felt very roomy inside, not too bad rental £30 for two days.

They are great little cars, I've had the Aygo, C1 and 107 as courtesy cars and all were fine. Although nice to get back into a bigger car after.

Even though the Pug Hdi had it's faults, I do miss it on a run, only 136bhp but felt like more as the power band was big.

  • It's unlikely somebody would purchase a 307 from BCA and not expect it to be riddled with issues anyway, it's going to auction and somebody will bid what it's worth.

    I wouldn't worry.

You aren't really being given a trade in value for your old car. It will be worth £150 if you get a scrap dealer to uplift it plus you should have been able to get easily the £400 discount or near it with a bit of haggling.
Don't let them make you feel guilty or that they are doing you a favour. Ask him how long he has had the car for sale for. it is an offence to lie or fail to disclose info. look at the registration doc and try to contact the previous keeper and ask them about the car. i have done this, Google helps with numbers and most people are happy to tell you about their old car.

If you bought a Jag diesel it would have a Pug engine. Ford, when they owned JLR, were in partnership with PSA (still are I think) and built the engines at Dagenham so JLR used them. 2.7v6, 3.0v6, 2.2 and 2.0. Not sure about the v8 tdi.

Now Jag are owned by TATA and are just about to start production of a new range of diesel and petrol engines made in a new factory by Telford which will be launched in the XE this year.

I was told all Vauxhall diesels are Fiat design.
