Part e/xing an old banger with faults

We have been offered a very generous interest free loan by my parents in law to replace our clapped out Peugeot 307 HDI which has done 140K miles. We have seen a car we like and are going to test drive it tomorrow to make sure it is suitable. The independent dealer has offered us £400 for our p/ex off the price of the new car which is £5595. The thing is our existing car has a couple of what possibly could end up being expensive faults.
Firstly, the air blower doesn't work and we have been quoted about £250 to get this repaired, so not really economical. Secondly, the engine management light/anti pollution fault comes on on short runs. When the car has been on a decent drive this goes off. We have had this problem before and had to have the DPF replaced and the Eolys (?) fluid topped up. Last summer a local mechanic cleared the faults but they returned. The car runs well though with no loss of power, smoke, etc. The car has FSH and is bodily not too bad - a couple of supermarket trolley dings and a few minimal scratches.
I just feel really bad if we don't mention these faults to the dealer, but also cannot afford another £400 on the asking price of the new car. OH is of the opinion that we just don't say anything, but that doesn't sit right with me. I'm pretty sure the car will go into an auction rather than on the dealers forecourt as he seems to deal with much higher end cars (the one we are buying is at the lower end of his prices). Anybody had any experience of p/exing a car with faults?

Can't be that old to have dpf and eolys fitted?
So £400 sounds like it more than takes into account the faults.
My 13 year old Passat tdi with same miles would be worth 3 times that amount.0 -
TBF you'd probably get £400 off the price anyway without a trade in.
If it makes you feel better I traded my 307 in for £3200 with numerous faults, dealer didn't care as it looked mint and had FSH, so would do well at auction.0 -
It had the DPF and Eolys done at 110K - we bought it from a dealer and it was done under warranty as it went wrong within a week of having it. To be honest this car has been a lemon - numerous niggly faults, having to replace the dual mass flywheel and clutch at nearly £800 (and that was cheap!), plus various failed sensors and it eats headlight bulbs like no tomorrow.
Worst case scenario and he goes back on the deal then we'll try and borrow another £400 off the in laws and whack the Pug on eBay, listing all the faults. They still seem to sell on there even with all the usual temperamental electrics.
It just morally feels wrong to offload it on to someone else with all thats wrong with it. Perhaps I need to toughen up!LBM 7th Jan 2014

It's £400, as mentioned they're getting it for free anyway.
It's not a lemon, it's a pug hdi.0 -
Have you paid a deposit yet?
If not then the new car is still open to negotiation. How is it priced compared to others on Autotrader?0 -
I would mention the faults to the dealer, Looking at changing cars myself and i am honest and tell them what it will need before the next MOT.
One i looked at yesterday didnt car as long as it will drive through the auction. Anything over 125,000 miles goes direct to auction no matter how good it appears.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Not paid a deposit, all being well that was tomorrow's plan. Price is about par for the course for dealer prices on Autotrader.LBM 7th Jan 2014

As long as you don't lie if asked, I don't see the problem. I traded in a pick-up last year with serious issues (seized balance shaft and leaking crankshaft seal), all they did was checked for EML then offered me twice what I would have accepted.0

As above, your p/ex is probably what you could negotiate off with no p/ex anyway, so tell the dealer the truth. You car is probably worth £150 scrap anyway!0

In 2008 we traded in a multipla that lost reverse gear the night before & we still got the discount.0
