Mac Book or Windows laptop?

Options
Hi guys,

Looking for some advice here.

The Mrs has decided we need a laptop. This is because she cant do everything she wants on her ipad so needs one. Question is, which one.

We both have ipads and iphones because they are easy to use, and I am not very tech savvy. I can do AV systems with no problems, but computers... no. So ipad and iphone suit me, they seem hard to mess up.

I do not need it for anything particular, and I think she will only want it for office like stuff.

I am thinking apple is probably the way to go so it can integrate with our other stuff (ipads, iphones and apple TV), but they dont seem too user friendly to me, or I could be wrong? The only computer I use is at work and I can manage internet and email and office, that is all I need.

So my question is, what would be a good buy? I have about £1000-1500 to spend. Maybe a mac book air? I have no idea.

If you want to go in to ghz details, I will do my best to follow, but please make it simple for me :)

Thanks in advance.

Luke

That budget would buy 5 or more windows laptops, so apple is the way to go if you wish to empty your bank account quicker.

For the cost of one bottle of Champagne you can buy many, many bottles of mineral water, but is it a fair comparison? Of course not.

or you can be sensible, stop lining the pockets or the marketing industry, and drink out of the tap
  • Thanks for the input I think... Im not sure about these metaphors though. So I guess windup is against apple? And jjlandlord maybe likes them? Can someone give me some pros/cons? I have researched, but all the sites either love/hate apple/windows.

You haven't said what she wants to do, but they can both probably do it, so it comes down to do you want to spend a grand on macbook, or 200 upwards on a windows laptop, and which gui feels nicer or more familiar - currys sell both if you want to look at some
  • I dont think she wants it for anything special, just documents and internet. To be honest, I think she wants apple to integrate with the other stuff we have, but I cant really see the point. As you say, a £200 windows will do everything she needs, but wont look so fancy and maybe wont be able to stream to the TV (which is important).
  • Why not go Apple, but second hand. You don't sound like demanding users but the free OS updates and lack of malware would be right for you.

I bought a Macbook Air from eBay quite a few years back and its still going strong (I feel a similar age Windows laptop would be useless by now).

This sounds like a perfect plan! I didnt even think of that. Thank you.

We are not demanding users at all. We really dont need anything fancy, but just need a bit more than an ipad can offer if you know what I mean.

I would go for a pro over the air, much higher spec for your money and very little difference in size. I have a macbook i bought in 2008, i foolishly dropped it down the stairs within weeks so apple replaced the whole unit, i have also recently doubled the memory for £50.

I find OS very user friendly, i have nothing against windows but i would avoid windows 8 as it is more difficult to navigate.

OP, if she wants to use it for office like stuff, then any laptop will do. However, you'll need to buy a mac for it to integrate with your other Apple devices.

What's the screen size that you are looking for? Although Macbook Air is a great laptop, but Apple still didn't make a retina (high resolution) version of that. Nonetheless, it has great battery life (the latest ones last up to 12 hours).

The macbook pros come in retina version and I would highly recommend that if you can afford it.
