We have now decided what type of hens we want and are off to look at some tomorrow, with a view to bringing some home in a couple of weeks :j
I'm thinking about getting two more (we have five), but I already struggle to use/distribute the eggs we have :rotfl:
Might wait till next year and get a couple of bantams.
I'm starting to think about what might go in my beds after I've pulled out what I've got. I'm growing beans, peas, sweetcorn, squashes, kale, pakchoi and spring onions (probably other things too but I can't for the life of me remember it all...)
Then, in containers, cucumbers, chillis and tomatoes. Any suggestions greatly appreciatedIf edible, then great, but if not can anyone recommend some "green manure" to plant after this years harvest?

I had a productive day yesterday too - replanted all the lavender I grew from seed last year, and planted masses of seeds - OH and I have a week off next week, so hoping the (heavy clay) soil will be workable to get all the beds ready - I have broad beans ready to go out already - I used loo rolls as pots and it has worked really well. excellent root systems!0

Chicken house is up :j just need to finish wiring the chicken run and extra security and we are ready to go. Looking at 27th or 28th March to bring the chickens home :j:j
Even better is that we are getting all 6 at the same time rather than 2,2 and 2 :cool:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. How exciting! You'll be making the best omelettes you've ever had before long!0 -
Fresh eggs are wonderful. I wish I could have some chickens here. Maybe one day! I've had a very busy weekend and not done anything gardening wise apart from nurture my seedlings. I think I may have planted too many but my daughters are intending to have a stall at the school fete in June so we can sell plants there. I can also take them into work and sell or swap them there. I'm hoping that I'll have room to grow a few butternut squash in a container - any advice welcome on that!
Skint but happy with my lovely family
Hypnotherapy rocks :j0 -
Started to get the potatoes planted last week but damaged my cruciate again last Thursday and ended up on crutches again. Not too bad now but being very careful, therefore quite pleased that it has rained here for the last two days as it's an excuse to stay indoors - the potatoes will have to wait another few days.
All hens safely moved to new pen, no one escaped, and they have started to lay well again, I'm getting about 85-86% lay per day which is brilliant for this time of year - but that's a awful lot of eggs to deal with!!0 -

I may be wrong, but aren't squash spreading plants? I think you'd struggle to contain it in s containerzafiro1984 wrote: »Started to get the potatoes planted last week but damaged my cruciate again last Thursday and ended up on crutches again. My spuds are starting to go in later this week :j
Being on crutches is no excuseuse the bottom of your crutch to create the trench and then a grabber/litter picker to put the potatoes in with

After being vegan for ages, I struggled too...but you get in the swing of things. Egg mayo with plenty of homegrown chives is just wonderful, and I've improved my poaching, scrambling and pancake skills
My peas are shooting up, my sweetcorn is peeking through, and my forty or so tomato seedlings are looking good. Waiting on wood to come so OH can build me some raised beds, but I bought recycled wood from a charity (£50, cut to size incl. delivery) so I don't really want to ring up nagging them :rotfl:
Put OHs name down on three allotments that I haven't put my name down for, so now we're on them all. I really hope we get something soonUntil then, onwards with our weird, slim and long, Victorian garden plot!

I nipped up to A allotment today with the intention of just checking that everything is ok. I ended up turning over a second bed for potatoes, pulling up a load of cabbages that were doing nothing and cutting the grass! That was very hard work with a push mower but I'm glad it's done. I was given a parsnip by one of my plot neighbours and it's rather big
I decided to spend a but more time at that plot this week as I'll be at the other one on weekends. Potatoes are going in at both sites before the weekend :jI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards.
