I spent the morning in the greenhouse potting up tomato seedlings, cornflowers, lupins and peas - everything is looking very promising would that the weather was a bit more palatable it is really cold here today. My apricot tree is in full blossom so I am hoping for a few cloudy days with no frost whilst the fruit sets. The apricot tree is always the first to flower it is a real sign that spring is round the corner.

My apricot is late this year :( it's there but it's happening very slowly :(

Sorry if this has been asked already. I am puzzled about why my lettuce seedlings aren't really doing anything. They're from a 2 years out of date packet of posh seed from Seeds of Italy, canary tongue lettuce, meant to sow from Feb, so I did, in compost indoors. A few have 2 proper leaves but most have just seed leaves. They're not getting any bigger, and they've been 'through' for a good 2 weeks. They're in a conservatory, well watered, it was a newish bag of compost, wondered if anyone can tell me what I should be doing differently?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Welcome newbies.

Today I have repotted my tomato plants and provided them with support. Since putting the broad beans outside, the black spot has gone and they are flourishing. The peas too seem to be surviving, not looking particularly healthy but they have some flowers appearing.

I have also cleaned the outside of my greenhouse today.

Hello again, reporting back after I'd been away.
All I can report this morning is that my tomato plants in the kitchen had been watered and are alive! Polytunnel and plot update will follow after inspection!

Hello, can I join in? I've got a half-plot allotment I share with a friend and a veg patch and 'orchard' in my garden. For various health and family reasons I haven't been able to do much for the last couple of years, but this year I'm hoping to move everything forward a bit! Looking forward to some inspiration, ideas and help from the more knowledgeable ones here!

Hi, I'm another visitor from the flyladies thread - but I kept writing about gardening instead of housework lol.
I've got 4 fruit/veg areas in the garden and a strip I've just converted (with much muscle-power from Mr N) from brambles. We decided that as we're rural, there are plenty of blackberries around and the space could be put to better use. Last year I got 5 blueberry plants which will have to stay in pots as my soil isn't ericaceaous, so they are on the edge of this strip. The main bit is pretty sunny so I'm going to do various runner and climbing beans along with sweet peas.
Broad beans are in. A steady stream of Things in Trays are in the greenhouse.
Anyone grown Goji berries? I got a couple of plants cheap in Ald1 last year, planted them in temporary bed but to my horror when I read up to see what they like, found that they are quite large and rampant and tend not to fruit for several years (if at all, according to some reviews). I am now thinking of putting them somewhere obscure so they don't waste loads of space - maybe even in the hedge at the bottom of the garden. Any suggestions?
Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.

    Good morning, all.
When inspecting the tunnel, I found that the autumn planted lettuces are ready to eat! They are not very big but a few bowls of salad are better than nothing had I left the empty space ! Next steps will be to remove the mattresses and dig up the new potato plots. Chitters are ready to go in!
Narc0lepsy, I've never been successful with Gojis and I'm glad to hear from you that they can grow well here.

    Hello Narc0 and jazee

I have potatoes aplenty chatting away but I'm going to do them in bags this year. Last year I overspudded the allotment and struggled with the watering and harvesting. The beauty of bags in the gardens means I can pull up my spuds when I want them for a meal so I think I'll go back to that method and save the sllotment space for something more interesting :)

Carolinerunner I suspect it's the 2 yrs out of date bit that might be the problem even though you've had germination the seeds might not be in the finest fettle :(
