"Hogging the middle lane"

Agree with above, the reporting though makes me laugh

"Police said six drivers had to brake and swerve to overtake the Berlingo"
If that was the case then 6 more drivers should have been hauled in front of the courts for their level of driving. A van hogging the middle lane doesn't just appear from no where causing evasive action.

It's The Daily Mail, they're known for exaggerating, more than likely they're are miss quoting the police, journalists are not known for letting the truth get in the way of a good story.

Fantastic news, let's hope more of the half-witted idiots (including the OP) that think it's OK to potter along in the middle lane get caught.

Boils pretty much every one of my bodily fluids to see someone quite happily in their own world sat in the middle lane when there's just no need.

If this is an accurate reflection of how you feel when driving a vehicle, i suggest you give up driving.

It's not healthy for you, or others around you.

I still have a problem with this part:
PC Nigel Fawcett-Jones from the Road Policing Unit of West Yorkshire police said lane hogging was dangerous and caused congestion and inconvenience to other road users.
He said: “It reduces the capacity of roads and motorways, and can lead to dangerous situations where other drivers 'tailgate' the vehicle in front to try and get the lane hogger to move over.
Regardless of the rights or wrongs of lane hogging, to me that sort of comment gives an excuse to the tailgaters, who are the ones actually causing any danger involved, and are by far the bigger problem on the roads. The decision to "try to get the hog out of the way" by tailgating is entirely in the hands of the tailgater - absolutely no-one is making them do it!

    Lane hogging = annoying.

    Tailgating = dangerous.

Personally I'd rather have 100 people being annoying on the road than one person being dangerous. Others' opinions may vary.

Lane Hogging is poor driving, tailgating is dangerous driving.

To me there should be twice the penalty for tailgating.

Surely if your being tailgated you should do everyone a favour and just move over to let the Audi pass?

I don't want some lunatic running my family off the road because some stubborn pillock was deliberately p1ssing him off 1 mile earlier.

That particular section of the M62 has deep groves worn in the inside lane from HGV traffic.
You are fighting the wheel constantly from getting dragged from one grove to the other.
I wonder if they have ever thought about repairing it ?

    Depends entirely on the situation.

If you have a clear lane to move across to, without inconveniencing others already in that lane and without having to slow because of traffic ahead then, yes you should.

On the other hand if - as is often the case - they're trying to push you to move into someone else's safety gap, or move into traffic that you're going to have to slow significantly before they've passed for you to move out again, then no you shouldn't.

On the other hand, in both of the above cases, the person tailgating should be penalised because driving too close is by far the major cause of accidents on motorways, and the "reason" for doing it don't matter. It's simply unacceptable.

I do hope the police don't get over zealous in trying to enforce this. It is sometimes possible to accidentally end up in the middle land with nothing on the inside. If you're overtaking someone and they leave the motorway whilst they are in your blind spot you might be waiting for them to appear in your RVM before changing back to the left lane.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
