One of them was probably this guy from the comments section :rotfl:

Dunno, motorway late at night, doing 70mph, coming across some fool doing 40 in the middle lane, you wouldn't have much time to react. I've come across them whilst doing 60 down quiet A and B roads, it really sh*ts you up.

Add into that the local council energy saving scheme, where they turn the lights off after certain times and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I would ask however why this person was in the middle lane in the first place? Surely so late at night there would be no need to be in that lane at all............ Unless he'd been in lane 1 and pulled out to overtake before the impact.

As said above, the driver was probably offered a fixed penalty but managed to turn it into £1,000 and five pints by his own ineptitude.

    I'll drink to that!

You know all those signs you see on the motorway, and you have time to see them, and read them? Those are doing 0 MPH! How you miss a car doing 40 is beyond me!

Not sure what to think about your example!

Road signs are covered in retro-reflective material....... I doubt the old mans car had more than the obligatory twin reflectors, which wouldn't work until the vehicle was either in front or to the front left, due to the beam patterns of dipped headlights.

Something people don't seem to understand is how hard it is to see car with no lights, when every car around it has their lights on.

Fantastic news, let's hope more of the half-witted idiots (including the OP) that think it's OK to potter along in the middle lane get caught.

Boils pretty much every one of my bodily fluids to see someone quite happily in their own world sat in the middle lane when there's just no need.

At a closing speed of 30mph (in your example) or 15mph (in what the commenter claimed) you should have plenty of time to react - it's the difference in speed that matters, not how fast you're going.

Even old halogen sealed beams will give 100m or more of light and, if you can't react and slow down by 30mph (in your example) in 100m, then you're doing something very, very, wrong!

In his example, it was exactly the same as if he was doing 15mph and there was something stationary on the road. If you can't avoid that at night you need to either turn your own headlights on, get your eyes tested, or stop driving!

What's even worse is when the middle lane becomes lane 3 of a 4-lane section. You've got the two inside lanes virtually empty, one or more numpties pottering along at 60 in lane 3, and everyone who wants to overtake being forced out to lane 4.

To be fair, if you're a middle lane driver then a 4 lane motorway must confuse the hell out of you. Spare a thought for the poor befuddled dears.

Indeed, i've actually seen folk straddling the two middle lanes on a certain section of the M5 south.
