One of my pet hates is someone driving in the middle lane when there is no other traffic.
If there is no other traffic, then they are not having any impact on any other road users, so I'm not sure why you need to hate it!

In fact, advanced driving theory suggests that, in this instance, driving in the centre lane is the safest thing to do, as it gives you an additional margin of safety should you suffer a blowout or mechanical failure.

When there is other traffic about, then you should, of course, follow the Highway Code and keep left, as this is what other road users would expect of you.

    .

Absolutely, which ties in with one of my own pet dislikes (personally, nothing on the road matters enough to become a "hate")

The "keep left when not passing" brigade who come up almost onto your bumper before pulling out (because they're keeping left), overtake, then pull back in once they're about 10 feet clear, into your safety gap, only to pull out again just before rear-ending the car in front. then repeat that pattern all the way until they disappear - even when the outside lane is complpetely clear behind them all the way to the horizon.

They may be "keeping left cos the HC says to" but they're showing as little awareness of what's around them as any ML hogger, and doing it at a higher speed.

Please - LOOK in your mirrors and, if there's no-one behind you to be inconvenienced, stay out rather than weaving in & out of traffic!!!

I usually move out to lane 3 and back across. I figure that if they are inobservant enough to still be in lane 2 I don't really want to be passing them in lane 1 when they have a moment of clarity and move over without checking their blind spot.
..... is the most sensibly reasoned answer ;)

I pass them on the left if safe to do so.

It is not illegal to pass on the left. The offence is careless driving.

I'll keep doing it and take my chances in court if it ever comes to that.

Corrected that for you. How do you know it's going to be safe to pass on the left. Clearly the middle lane hogger is in a world of their own and unless you can read their mind how do you know they wont suddenly decide to move over just as you're undertaking them.

If there's no problem overtaking the numptie properly then why take the risk.

Move to lane two, begin to flash headlights.

70% of them will get the message, and will move into lane one.

For the 30%, move into lane three. Sit on horn.

    Return to lane one.

Just going to correct that for you :

"Move to lane two, begin to flash headlights.

1% of them will get the message, and will move into lane one.

For the 99%, move into lane three. Sit on horn.

    Return to lane one"

Unless the drivers in your area really are that bit more alert and accommodating than they are round my way :D

I pass them on the inside with a good blast on the horn and "the finger"
Yes, that is the correct manoeuvre.

A lot of people talking about circling the hogger, yet i've never in the 40k miles pa I drive have I actually seen this.

If though you did this to me, you'd get away with it once then after that you better be careful I don't slam my brakes on as you pulling behind me for a second time.

Problem is, if you want to be a !!!!, you need to be pretty confident the other guy isn't gonna retaliate because your teaching methods can quickly turn in to an expensive lesson involving a trip to court for dangerous driving

and in indulging in the practice, which I also have never seen, you are delaying yourself ... wasn't the reason you wanted to do it anyway the fact that said driver was delaying you ???

There is other traffic - someone has come behind them!

None that I've seen. In the left lane of the motorway, you've got at least one lane to the right, and the hard shoulder to the left, in general. Poor excuse to be a lane hog that one.

The "keep left when not passing" brigade

that's the rule of the road, the police etc...

Nope - these are bad drivers at the distances you quote.

    The official rule is -
You may only undertake legally if the vehicle/s in the lane to your right slow down to a speed lower than that being mainatined by the vehicles in the lane you are travelling in. Ie.e, your lane is moving at 60mph and the vehicles in the lane to your right slow down to 56 mph, then you can legally pass them to the left.

    OR

If the lane markings indicate that the lane you are in is, in effect, a separate road. I.e. the main road is the A12, but the left-hand lane becomes the A133 before exiting at the next junction.

Under no other circumstances, may a vehicle undertake.
