  • I often "pass" someone on the inside in this situation.

Or I will circle them until they get the hint.

I usually move out to lane 3 and back across. I figure that if they are inobservant enough to still be in lane 2 I don't really want to be passing them in lane 1 when they have a moment of clarity and move over without checking their blind spot.

It is not illegal to pass on the left. The offence is careless driving.

I'll keep doing it and take my chances [STRIKE]in court[/STRIKE] in hospital if it ever comes to that.
Corrected that for you. How do you know it's going to be safe to pass on the left. Clearly the middle lane hogger is in a world of their own and unless you can read their mind how do you know they wont suddenly decide to move over just as you're undertaking them.

If there's no problem overtaking the numptie properly then why take the risk.
  • oo, I love circumnavigating the middle laners. From lane 1, move across to lane 3 (going behind the middly), then overtake and go back in to lane 1, slow down so that they come past, and repeat. Passes the time...

  • I am following the speed of the lane on the left - this may be more than the speed of the middle lane moron.

I can't be !!!!ing bothered to go right and then back again because a brain damaged !!!!wit it occupying the middle lane.

I will pass on the left if safe to do so. If not, I will move over.

I have been driving around Taiwan this year and tried doing this. I managed for nearly a month, but it was just costing too much in petrol! ;)

I estimate that 3 out of 4 cars drive in the wrong lane here. I will literally follow a car joining the freeway, with no cars in front of us as far as the eye can see, and watch the deranged lunatic indicate (sometimes) and move straight into the middle lane.

Then there are people that hog the outside lane - that don't get my attention much any more as the inside lane is generally free and clear of all traffic while the other two lanes are inexplicably filled with slow movers shuffling from one lane to the other based on wind direction and moon phase.

It's possible to buy your driving license here instead of passing a test. And following my thousands of km driving through the cities, along the freeways and highways and out in the countryside here, I have come to the conclusion that there is simply no rule about lanes. There is no difference to the Taiwanese driver between the left lane, middle lane, right lane... it's all the same. In fact, I'd go one step further and suggest that they have been taught that on any two-lane road, it is imperative that they pull alongside the car in front, match their speed, and form a rolling roadblock.

And a lot of drivers don't even bother with their lights at night (I see this once or twice [STRIKE]daily[/STRIKE] nightly).

I really must post some videos so that everyone in the UK can appreciate just how lucky they are.

Then again... the UK's driving is boring, grey, dismal. For city driving, I recommend Paris. :D Absolutely edge-of-your-seat delightful. For distance driving, Australia. Whenever I have to navigate somewhere, I'll always see if I can get Google Maps to divert me through a few hundred kilometres of Australia.

Australia a bit out my way on my drive to work. Its hard enough getting up at 8.30 as it is.
  • Ideally a more powerful car is better suited and safer to overtake in.

Overtaking really should be banned for anything under a vehicle with under 400BHP/t in my opinion. It's something that really annoys the performance car driver.

It's dangerous enough overtaking in something like, say, an M3 or M5 in daylight thanks to all the Micras and Mondeos, but at night when it's dark? Then it really matters.

One of my pet hates is someone driving in the middle lane when there is no other traffic.

If you drive in the inside lane your engine will not fall out. Your phallic symbol will not fall off. Hate it hate it. But if I have to overtake someone who is clearly so stupid they believe that the middle lane is necessary I do what lots of other posters have already said. Indicate and over take on outside lane then just and only just as soon as it is safe I go straight into the inside lane.

Another pet hate and one which is even worse is people who drive with fog lights on when there is no fog!. Why Why!!! It does not make your car look better. It does not make it look sporty you just look like a fool!
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A
  • Move to lane two, begin to flash headlights.

70% of them will get the message, and will move into lane one.

For the 30%, move into lane three. Sit on horn.

    Return to lane one.

I go to the outside lane, pass them on the side they might expect to be passed on (which makes sense seeing as the fact of them staying in the middle lane suggest they may not be as alert / confident / competent as I'd like), then move back over.

Honestly, if I ever got to the point where I wasn't capable of reading the situation in time to do that safely and with zero effort, or if I became so mentally challenged that I felt the need to "make a point" to them, I'd be questioning my own abilities before worrying about their actions :)
