SPEND IT. Did you have a successful connection before you cancelled it?
  • Send it back and do the decent thing. That said, I don't know what I would do.......

This is the killer question. If it was "successfully connected", and then disconnected, you're entitled to it.
  • Legally you can't benefit from a mistake so if the company asked for them back you'd have to return them. Although I'd make this difficult for them refusing to pay postage, they'll probably send out a sae. It's like is the bank accidentlly put £100 in your account and you spent it. When they noticed they'd force you to return the money.
I'd contact the and ask if they were sent as a good will gesture. They'll probably write them off but you'd best check

If you cancelled before being successfully connected by an in-force contract, my personal view is that the only truly honest answer is to exercise some conscience and not use it. When you phone the company (as you no doubt will if you are due a refund), be up-front. Tell them the voucher has been received in error and offer to send it back, if the company offers good will by letting you keep it, then you've benefited from their error. Ultimately, the cost of errors are passed on as higher prices for everyone so what is a short term gain for one is a longer term loss for many. The terms & conditions of using the voucher are known - isn't ignoring them deliberately theft?

    It really isn't

There's no need to do this

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

I recently signed up to switch my broadband to a new provider after seeing a great deal advertised, which included £100 of vouchers for a ‘successfully connected contract’. Due to a number of mistakes - including money being taken from my bank account that I still haven't had back - I cancelled the order. Despite this I've just received the voucher. Should I spent it or send it back?
Take it from a guy who's worked for BT and they send out vouchers for sainsbury's all the time, they don't chase you up about it, they don't lose money from it, a large majority of customers that order from BT don't get their vouchers because they get lost in the post, so spend it while you have it, they won't follow you up for it.
  • In theory, these aren't yours and you should return them. However, they won't have been sent to you by the company itself, they will have sub-contracted that out to another firm (and will have got the vouchers at a discount, to boot), so finding out who to actually return them to may prove difficult. You would also need to send them signed for otherwise you risk no-one recording that they have actually been returned.

You should keep them and spend them. In the highly unlikely event that the company chases you up for them, you can always claim that you never received them in the first place.

  • Hi. I took out a contract with sky using an MSE blag. Received £100 of M&S vouchers from Sky but not the £82 worth from the link. Don't know how to get them sent to me as they
were not directly from Sky:( About vouchers sent then contract cancelled....I would be tempted to check with the provider. If you spend them and are then asked to refund the company, only a good deal if you intended to spend that money anyway.
