and other than Solihull, gt94sss2, im not aware of an HSBC branch in the West Midlands that has a coin machine. and i'm not aware of any Barclays, Lloyds or RBS machines. any of these would be useful to me, especially Central Birmingham...if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Geography's not my strong point. The HSBC list of machines published in 2010 includes Merry Hill Shopping Centre. I would have thought many of the large city branches which have been refurbished/updated over the past 5/6 years with new HSBC machines would have a coin one.

Only way to know for sure is to ask the banks directly though!

An alternative if you buy stuff from supermarkets is some of the self-service machines. Morrisons I think has a small basket / bowl type thing that you can pour change into. It doesn't give you cash in your current account but gives you 'face value' for your coins.

We use Tesco self-service checkouts for all our excess loose change - sometimes loads of it (tip - pick a very quiet time, as it can take a long time and annoy the people in the queue!). Works for us in getting rid of change.

Though last time we put so much it we filled the machine's capacity for bronze coins! Couldn't work out why it kept rejecting the 2p's and 1p's (we had loads) until the supervisor came over and checked. Told us to use pound coins for the rest of the balance. Very embarrassing.

paying 9.9% seems madness to me...either you want your own money into your own bank account, or you want to be lovely, like SailorSam, and give it to charity:)

    ok...interesting stclair...will have a look.
that is HSBC's 'Main' branch..arguably, historically, the most important of all.

anyone know of Barclays, Lloyds, RBS branches in Birmingham City Centre that have coin machines?

it doesn't make any difference whether it's $5, £50 pr £500 pounds in copper to change, Coinstar charge 9.9% as their website clearly states
    http://www.coinstar.co.uk/FAQ.aspx

Thats what I was getting at, 9.9% of £5 is nothing to write home about but when you are changing £50 or £100 then 9.9% becomes a sizeable chunk.

Just an update I was in the HSBC referenced earlier and regretably they advisor told me the machines have been removed.

It appears only the NatWest branches have them in the City Centre.

    Hi planteria,

Our branches don't have those coin machines. If you wish to deposit or exchange coins, that needs to be done using coin bags at the counter (bags can be collected in branch).

    Thanks,

Does anyone know if there are any banks with coin-counting machines in Newcastle upon Tyne please?

The link posted by stclair says that the Northumberland Street branch has a cash and cheque deposit machine; just wondering if anyone knows if it accepts coins?

If not, I will try and take a walk along one lunch time to check it out.

the Northumberland street branch has two deposit machines and one of them is a coin machine

    thanks stclair and Craig.

with Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS 'proper' current accounts i thought i'd spread myself thinly enough:think:.
  • I would like to know this also as this seems to be my nearest branch with a deposit machine. Don't want to haul £50 of copper up if the machine doesn't take it.

I rang the Northumberland Street branch of Natwest to ask, and the guy I spoke to said they do have a coin counting machine that pays the value into one of their card-based accounts.

I was planning on opening a basic savings account with a card so that I can use the machine to pay in my change. I will post an update once I have been able to try it out myself, but it sounds promising!
