When do you stop giving Christmas presents?

  • Doesn't it depend whether you have a close relationship with them once they're adults? I've got several aunts - on one side of the family we've never been that close so they have sent me cards ever since I became an adult, and vice-versa. On the other side, however, I have one aunt who I and my sister are very close to - go and see several times a year, talk on phone regularly etc etc. She still gives us a Christmas present, and we reciprocate. And we're in our 50s!

We stop when a baby comes along, then we buy for the baby/child. If they don't have children, we continue with the adults.

I'm putting my neck on the line here, but why does becoming 'of age' stop you from buying presents? I know my 19 year old niece who is at uni really appreciates £20 or a visit and a trip round tesco in the new year to stock up her fridge. Much more than my 7 year old nephew who has tons of stuff.

In my family it stops when you leave full time education / uni and get a full time job.

    That sounds better.

when they stop sending thank you letters.

I've never bought a christmas present so that I can get a thank you letter.

  • We stop at 18, but then when they have children we buy for them, so having five nieces we now have seven of their children to buy for. None of our children have children so at the moment it is quite unequal but we don't mind.

This is what I dont get.. Why are people suddenly unimportant enough to not buy presents for just because the have a child ?
Kids get more than enough at xmas - lots of it bought from their parents so why then do they need to be taking over their parents gifts as well

I have 3 children- 2 grown up I also have a grandchild- my eldest daughter doesnt suddenly have her gifts stopped because she gave birth Its my granddaughter who has lesser value gifts- she gets plenty elsewhere
  • I stopped getting presents from my mum's side of the family when I turned 21, so 11 years ago for me. My youngest cousin still gets present's but only for 1 more year.

It doesn't bother me and has just always been the norm.

I'm now a mum anyway, the only one who is so far out of all the cousins and my mum's sister has started buying my daughter presents. She sent us some money for Christmas for her which was just lovely as totally not expected.

My dad's mum has always chosen to still buy me presents both for my bday and Christmas. She even sends my hubby presents for his bday and Christmas.

  • Think I was 16 when the presents stopped from my Aunts & Uncles. M & D explained they'd all agreed it as it was too expensive with birthdays included as well.

I understood straight away, didn't even bat an eyelid to be honest, I would never expect my Aunties & Uncles to receive a present from me after childhood, so vice versa is fair. We are all pretty much adults from that point on.
