What do the factory images actually involve?

These are the core Android softwares - exactly as Google made them and before any other manufacturer put their own interfaces/launchers on.

If you have a stock Nexus device then you'll currently have one of these images installed already. IF you want to update to the latest one (before it is available OTA - Over The Air) then you can "flash" your device with the latest image.

If this sounds like alien-speak then you probably don't want to do it yourself, otherwise look at Nexus Root Toolkit (by Wugfresh) to make the process easier. (You'll need to backup your data and other settings - manually flashing a new image usually wipes the device).

I updated my OH nexus 7 2013 using wugfresh. it was rooted and had 4.4.4 before hand to 5.01 lollipop. It was fairly easy to do once you selected off media device MTP in usb connection (in settings) for PTP and once usb drivers installed. I lost all programs but wasn't bothered about that but you can always make backups

I installed 5.0 on my Nexus 7 2012 on Saturday. Downloaded from the google developer link posted earlier in the thread.

The install went OK. All your user data will get wiped. When you log back in, it should ask you if you want to reinstall the apps you had on there before. It is laggy though.

I'm going to try these suggestions I have found to see if it improves anything (try at your own risk - I have copied and pasted them from other sites):

    Edit # 1

Clearing your troubled tablet’s cache will reportedly resolve the issue and it’s pretty easy to do. If you’re up for the challenge, just follow these easy steps:

    Turn off your device.
Press and hold Power and volume down buttons simultaneously until you see a large arrow at the top of your screen.
Press the volume down button repeatedly until you see “Recovery” in the arrow.
Select it by pressing the power button.
You’ll see an android mascot with a red triangle and exclamation mark.
Hold down the power and press the volume up button once and then release the power button.
Press the volume down button repeatedly to select “erase or wipe the cache partition” from the list of options.
Wait for the process to complete and then restart your device.
If successful, you should notice an improvement in your tablet’s performance.

    Edit # 2

These steps are all easy to do and reversible.
Settings > About tablet > tap on the “Build number” entry seven times, which will unlock “Developer Options”.
Settings > Developer options > Set WINDOW ANIMATION SCALE, TRANSITION ANIMATION SCALE and ANIMATOR DURATION SCALE all to ANIMATION OFF
Settings > Developer Options > Background process limit > at most 3 processes
My tablet now goes fast enough to keep me sane until it is (hopefully) fixed with updates.

I wish there was an option to revert back to the previous OS, as my N7 is really winding me up now.

There is - use Nexus Root Toolkit to flash an earlier version.

See the earlier posts that mention (and link to) Wugfresh. :)

I'm glad I started a useful conversation, but it's too risky for me to undertake. Will wait patiently for official release. Thanks anyway.
