Curious to see just how far this dip in equities will go. I've been keeping back some spare cash in high interest current accounts to invest at a more opportune moment. Which fund and when are the important questions.

  • Nice to have some volatility back in the markets - probably much to do with the US ending (but not quite) QE

The US market has technically got a long way to fall with valuations so stretched - so valuation is still what I base buy decisions on, as in the long run these market fluctuations are just noise

there are only two types of investors – those who know they can’t make money from market timing, and those who don’t know they can’t.

Trackers? No need to worry if it will beat market or not.

    Interesting Santa rally so far!

This is xmas bonus - 'extra' cash. My long term monthlies are unchanged. Just best to inject at a low point. That reads wrong. I mean 'invest on a down'? :)

I've a rough 60:40 split active:tracker so I'm keen to see how for instance Woodford compares with the IMA sector and his former fund during such dips.

Maybe its going to be a late santa rally this year? I'd like some commodity and Russia increases under my tree - wishful thinking methinks. Especially with recession looming for the latter.

I've got some new cash coming in over the next few weeks but ISAs are done for the year. I need to decide whether to invest unwrapped or sit on cash. I'll probably invest, as worst case it goes down in value and uses less of our ISA allowances come next April!
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

No need to worry anyway - the market's an abstract concept

But picking the right way to invest in the UK markets can make a great difference

    Not for a while yet

I'm waiting for Woodford to take a dip to increase my position there, but these defensively positioned funds aren't getting much downside

It's mainly energy/resource stocks taking markets down, and most managed funds have been avoiding them for years ... Poss buy more Europe if we get a 5% or more drop

From my experience the two types of investors are those who look at valuations (and buy cheap no matter what the market's doing) and those who don't, and buy at the peak of market bubbles
