I've found me a box scheme and it was right under my nose all the time!
There's an estate a couple of miles from the village, not even that really, and they have a "shop" in the village hall every wednesday where they sell organic stuff. So I asked did they do a box scheme (thank you MSE'ers because I'd never heard of them before) and they said yes they do.
Five quid a week. Always have potatoes, carrot and onion, and then usually two other things in season. I can opt to not have things I really don't like and can even reduce the bulk of the potato and have something else of similar value in place of them. Plus the option to skip odd weeks because I'm not at all sure if I can eat a whole box full of food in that time.

I'm not sure if this will be of any use to anyone but I've just come across an excellent website - Goodness Direct - which sells a whole range of organic foods, eco-friendly household products, supplements etc and from what I've looked at so far it appears to be reasonably priced too
Here's an excerpt from their front page ...
We have 4000+ health foods, vitamins and items selected for those with special dietary needs. You can search for products that are dairy free, gluten free, wheat free, yeast free and low fat or organic food. Our range includes frozen and chilled foods, so do your complete shopping here. I have had my first delivery from Abel and cole today and it wil be my last.
I did not order a box as i wanted to try out some of their stuff.
I received some Tomatoes which were very small and mostly yellow, one was split and even had mould growing on it, considering they cost £2.05 I am not impressed.
I got a cucumber which again was small and part of it is rubbery.
THe lettuce was again small and cost £2.00.
I also ordered some eggs which say Medium on the box, they must be joking! They are the smallest Hens eggs that I have ever seen! Carrots ok. apples nice but they should be at £3.00 a kg! I will not be shopping form them again, the food that I received today is well below standard. I went to planet organic the other day and their veg is lovley and cheaper, so that is where i will go from now on. sorry Abel and cole, but expect better for THAT kind of money0 -
If you complain Abel and Cole usually refund your money or credit you for next order. I have always used A&C and whenever I have gone to other providers I have found their stuff not as good (never shopped in planet Organic though so I cannot comment).
Abel & Cole are usually very receptive to comments from their customers and I am sure it would be worth giving them another chance if you can be bothered ringing them and telling them how you found the goods lacking.
Incidentally, there is a very interesting article about them in today's Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1495262,00.html I hope the link works!

Hi caterina,
I emailed them this morning, did not really want to complain to them but felt as I had to because i was looking forward to the delivery and felt vey disappointed to be honest. so we will see what they say. Maybe I have just been unlucky. The article was a very interesting read and very informative. I was going to try farmaround too but do not think i will bother now, Planet organic are very good but i dont think that they have a lot of outlets, they have 3 in london and i think that is all for the country! but they do seem to stock everything that cant normally be found so was impressed, bit pricey for some things but fruit and veg is very good and reasonably priced.

Abel and Cole have replied to my email and fairs fair they are going to refund me for the Toms and the cue which is good.
Tried the Lettuce and must admit that it is lovely and my daughter loves the Apples..so not all bad0 -
Ann, do you live anywhere near Peckham/New Cross/Brixton? There is a very interesting community scheme there, if you are on low income you can get a great big bag of organic veg (or fruit) for £7!
I used to use Farmaround but not happy with the erratic quality of their goods, especially since the owner moved to Yorkshire, things have gone downhill, veg used to be good but I have always found the fruit unripe and not of great quality. A friend of mine still uses them for veg and likes them very much - obviously different people have different experiences!
Apparently Riverford is starting London deliveries, I have heard wonders of their boxes, people in this forum really rave about them.
Hope you find a good box scheme! If you want to find out more about the Peckham box scheme pm me.
