Changing the day the rent is paid

Hi everyone

Need some advice please. Currently we pay our rent on the 7th of each month. My partner is due to start a new job, with the old job she was paid on the last working day of each month, so paying the rent on the 7th and all other bills on the 1st was never a problem, but with this new job she has been told it's 4 weekly when she will get paid and it can be different days each month, the next payment would be the 9th January.

We are both so confused as to what to do, if she doesn't get paid until the 9th then how can we pay the rent and all other bills. Can we move the day we pay rent to perhaps the 12th of each month? I don't understand how all this works. Plus our landlord is not very helpful and so I think if we were to ask to change the date he would say no.

Any advice anyone has I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks!

Why would your LL give a toss when you or your partner gets paid? Same goes for anyone else you pay bills to really.

You're contractually obligated to pay your rent on the 7th of each month so that's what you just do. It's up to you and your partner to organise your money so that all your bills are paid on time.
  • was there any need to be rude? How can I possibly find money for rent if my partner gets paid 2 days after its due? I cannot just Magic the money out of thin air every month. It was a simple question asking if I am allowed to change the date the rent is due, why you had to answer in the manner you did I don't know.
  • Get a second bank account and set up all your bill and rent paymrnts from that, partner gets paid, transfer the correct amount into your bills account and then spend what's left and all is covered.
    That's what I do anyway.
Remember that 4 week paymeans 13 paydays a year.

Thank you for your reply. Is that a good or bad thing that there is 13 pay days a year?

I'm still just so confused how to work all this out lol.

It wasn't rudeness it was a genuine question. Do you care when your LL has to pay their mortgage?

You don't "magic" your money. You budget properly and then it won't be a problem.

Talk to the landlord....you should be able to pay it 2 days late without an issue. As long as it's just the once I don't see the landlord complaining too much.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Pointlessly obnoxious response to a reasonable question from someone who didn't know any better and so asked a question.

It came across rude. I just don't understand how to budget it when I don't have the money until 2 days after? I have no savings or credit cards. So how can I pay it :/ I know I probably sound stupid, but it just feels like a complete headache all this lol.

And your advice to the OP is...?
  • Being paid every 4 weeks means your payday will get earlier each month by 2 or 3 days hence transferring your bill money into a separate account so it can sit there for up to 28 days before your bills go out, the 13 payments means you get a bonus payment, one month they will be paid in the 1st and the 29th.
