35mph on a 30mph road - no 30mph/camera sign?

Hi all
I wonder if anyone can shed a bit of light on this for me.
Ok....I was driving along and I saw a speed camera van parked on the side. Looked at my speedo, I was doing 35. Looked at TomTom, it says 60 limit...looked for ANY signs and there were none. About 3/4 mile further on I see a 40 sign so I figured I was ok.
So, I've received a letter saying I was doing 35 in a 30 limit
. Because the Tomtom said 60 and I remembered not seeing any signs, I went back to see.
There are no circular signs saying 30. There are no traffic camera signs. The road comes off a roundabout...I drove back and fro a few times looking for "30"....on the third drive on the road, I noticed a sign as you come off the roundabout saying "NEW 30PMH IN FORCE".
i only saw it because I was looking for it. It really isnt noticeable at all and it was on the right hand side pavement, not on the left.
Do they have to have the circular 30mph signs? Do they have to have the camera signs?
From the roundabout to the van parked was about half a mile. From the van to where the 40mph sign was , was about 3/4 of a mile.
I just feel like I've been misled as the signs aren't very clear at all.
Is there a chance I can do a speed awareness course and if so, how would I go about it ?
Thanks in advance all

If you have no previous convictions for speeding and have not attended such a course before, giving the speed recorded (35 in a 30) there is a high chance that you will be offered the course.
It is not something that you 'go about' yourself - once you have returned the form declaring who was driving, the driver will receive correspondence that either offers the course, or advises that they'll be summoned to court.
I've attended such a course. They teach you to think of every street-lit road as being 30mph unless it's a divided dual carriageway, a motorway, or you are advised otherwise.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

As we tend to major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for Police tickets. Here's your link:

Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you are likely to need photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the Police (both sides, if appropriate).
HTHPlease note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

ive had two for speeding before but both were about 10-12 years ago. one was 36 in 30 and the other one was on the motorway, 82 in 70 (still peeved at that one as it was at 4.45am and no-one else was on the road lol)0 -
fluffybunny It sounds like you (and bryanb) could do with going on a speed awareness course if you are not able to work out the speed limit from the visual clues i.e. the presence of streetlights and no speed limit signs.
As for relying on your satnav...that's no excuse!0 -

I guess they are only available to people caught speeding?
You're right, it's 200yds not 100yds as I said. Plus of course the lamp posts must be more than 20ft tall.
Guess I'll never be caught and never get the course in that case - Ah well. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
I've noticed a number of these cases where a street becomes a 30mph zone and they don't always seem to put many/any 30 signs up to replace the old 40 ones... there's a 'new 30mph limit ahead' sign and that's often it.
I guess that's sufficient for the law - I appreciate the street lamps should signify a 30 zone but if the zone was previously a 40 or higher and they make little effort to make you aware of the change it does seem unfair....new 30 signs up should be fitted I'd think

Based on the above you might want to get your speedo checked, it appears that it close to under-reading which is illegal.0 -
The OP said that TomTom indicated that the speed limit was 60 MPH.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
