As for relying on your satnav...that's no excuse!

The OP said that TomTom indicated that the speed limit was 60 MPH.

I wasn't ''relying'' on the satnav, I mentioned it as it said '60mph' plus the poor signage

I find it a little worrying that anyone would be confused as to whether the speed limit was 30 or 60mph! There's usually a pretty noticeable difference between roads with such widely differing speed limits.

in all honesty, I dont think it should be 60 lol. I think it should be a 40 road but not sure about the lamposts lol

Nothing to add other than it looks like we have to be very vigilant these days - many local authorities are downgrading the speed limits on roads these days (the cynic in me suggests either more speeding fine opportunities or negating the need to maintain a given stretch of road).

This is a harsh way to deal with it but I suspect the local magistrate will automatically side with the cops anyway. Hope you get the chance of a speed awareness course (though many of these are run by companies with senior cops as company directors.....) and avoid the points.

I am not an expert on this, but I don't agree with some others on here. So do check pepipoo.

Local authorities are under rules to have proper signs up when speed limits change and a 30mph sign needs to be on both sides of the road and comply with statutory requirements. At the very least, it needs to be on your side and comply with the highway code standard signs.

So, if you were coming from, say, a 40 mph road to a 30 mph one, proper signs need to inform you.

In addition, those who are saying about street lighting particularly NWSteve, unless new street lights have been fitted, then the road should always have been a 30mph zone by your logic.

Check with your own county, double check the sign you saw, also see the reverse signs for coming out of the new 30mph zone, take photos and I would fight it if your facts are correct.

    But double check on pepipoo.

Was there a 30 mph just before the roundabout on the road you came from?

What was the speed limit on the road you came from?

There should be a proper sign where the speed limit drops to 30.
  • As Nick has said, the speed limit should be indicated by a pair of roundels at the point where it changes. If you are coming from a 30mph restricted road (streetlights) to another 30mph restricted road, standard roundel speed limit signs are not only not required, they are not permitted. Where a limit has been changed to 30mph on a road with streetlighting, the authorities are permitted to but not required to put up a sign indicating that a new speed limit is in force.

If a road other than a motorway has a compliant system of streetlighting, it should have a 30mph limit unless there are signs to the contrary and a Traffic Regulation Order setting the speed limit. Contrary to what has been said, this applies to dual carriageways as much as it does to single carriageways.

For starters, it's not my logic, it's taken from the relevant act.
Secondly, when it was a 40mph limit there would have been 40mph signs, these signs override the lamp post rulings. Get it now?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I was on a dual carriageway which was 70. Came off into a roundabout with four exits.
My exit only said NEW 30MPH IN FORCE on the right as you join the road .
The first circular sign saying a number is 40mph around a mile from the roundabout

Where a 40 MPH limit is rescinded to 30 mph there is no need to re-sign it, as all non motorway urban roads are all 30 MPH unless the 30 MPH limit is cancelled by another sign.
So if ten mile down the road before you set off, is a 30 MPH sign, the whole road is 30MPH until it needs to be cancelled out by another sign.
    It does not get repeated.
If you came from a 30 MPH limit on to another road via a roundabout , no sign means it is still a 30 MPH limit.
Stick to this rule in future and ignore the gadget.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
