  • We've just bought a house so cutting back a lot this year. We've set a budget of £80 each but I've gone over it a little bit. We do tend to go a bit mad at Christmas because we don't usually spend a lot on what we want throughout the year and we don't do much for birthdays etc. Generally I'd rather save our money and have a holiday but next year it's my 30th and we're getting married so there are plenty of other things we could do with spending the money on.

Like a few other posters, we've decided not to buy presents for each other. We don't need more "stuff". I look back to past Christmases, and the piles of presents that just added to the ever growing mass of stuff that had to be be housed somewhere. I want more significance in our lives, not more things

  • I would usually spend around £100-£200 on my partner.

This year however, I'm not working due to severe anxiety. He's off sick and awaiting a very urgent operation, so money is really tight, so we're not really doing presents for each other, though I will get him something up to around £20 if I can manage that.

I have spent £35 on the deposit for a festival for OH. But if I hadn't, he would have paid it anyway.
Apart from that I have spent about £12, I got him a copy of a book that means a lot to us, a vintage picnic rug and a keyring for his new car. We had agreed we weren't spending much on each other this year as there was nothing we wanted. Now I look at it, they look like utterly terrible gifts.

  • I used Tesco vouchers on double up for a hudl and went through topcashback. The cost was £2 after the vouchers and topcashback have given me £2.81 back. So can I have a minus 81p option please? ;)

I've spend about £100 and I enjoy treating him to things he wouldn't just buy himself (wallet, aftershave etc). Just wondered if the people who spend £0 and have children used to buy for each other before they had children or thats what they've always done? We have 2 kids and have always let the children choose something to buy and wrap to give to us and each other, hope it teaches them that giving presents can be as much fun as receiving. I think it's worked as my son is now 17 and now has a part time job, he has gone out and bought us, his sister and grandparents small gifts and cards with his own money, made me feel very proud that to him this was a natural thing to do.
  • I've spent around £120 on my OH - but his big gift I got at a huge discount so if I had paid full price for everything it would have been nearer £250.

The £120 is a bit more than I usually spend but his big gift is something that I know he really wants and I couldn't resist getting it at such a good price...then I bought a couple of other little inexpensive bits because I think it's nice to have a few things to unwrap.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

I had spent around £25-30 on a few bits and pieces when he announced that he intends to move out in the new year. So DS can give him those bits and I'm not buying any of the other things I'd planned to now.

I only have a few people to buy for so spend a little more than I should really, but I make presents too being a crafty creative person.
