Thanks, at the moment Avis UK site is coming out cheapest so I'll contact them tomorrow and pass on the info incase it helps anyone else out. If there's an extra charge I'll be looking at rentalcars.com :)

I booked Alamo through Netflights earlier this month and they were the cheapest by a long way. We are picking up from San Francisco Union Square, but will be returning to the airport after our trip.

Fair enough, it was only something I read on a none too reliable source - and it might vary between different brokers, different actual rental companies, and possibly whether you use airport locations or downtown locations maybe.

Anyway, it's worth searching around just in case.

Spent ages searching last night. It does seem to be that most people perceive booking via UK/EU to be fee free. In reality, the websites aren't at all clear. Having now spoken to Avis via their online chat facility I have a written confirmation that no additonal fee will be charged. However, this appears to be due to picking up the car from Union Sq. If I was collecting from SFO then a £65 one way fee would be due.

For anyone looking, the code H811101 gives 15% off USA/Canada on Avis UK site. I got a 6 day rental of a midsize car for £197 incl. all waivers and unlimited mileage in August.

    Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!
The 0161 311 3111 is working again (it went through a stage of advising to call the 0845 number, but looks like it is back on now)...
So anyone dialing this Manchester number to then make calls to the USA, is gonna get it free if u get free landline calls from house phone or mobile, etc etc :)

    CAR RENTAL:

Book with Netflights, which will use ALAMO, there is no 1 way Fee for SFO to LAS...
Also, If booking 1 or 2 days, add on the fuel in the extra part, and it works out real good! My LAX to LAS 1 day rental cost £37 for standard SUV + £8 extra for a full tank of fuel!! :D:D

Book with Usrentacar.co.uk who use ALAMO or DOLLAR, for same trip, there is no 1 way fee.

Can I be certain there is no fee ? YES
why ? Cos I have it in black and white that SFO to LAS has no fee, along with LAX to LAS, and several places in NV/CA/AZ (and mainly airport locations)
    :)
  • if you do have car insurance through bank (Amex platinum for example) try carrental8.com, it wont be insured through the rental, paid 140£ for 10 days from LAS airport mit drop of in SFO.

Never heard of them (doesnt mean anything) but have just checked against Alamobrits for my upcoming rental and Alamobrits came out cheaper and does include insurances with extra driver
  • I got a confirmation of no one way from usrentacar, San Diego to Vegas. Very hard to tell from their website, so I called them and they said to book then send booking number and they'd confirm in writing.

I think it's probably safest to check fees on a case by case basis. Dollar once told me that their fees depend also on the terms of the booking agent.

I'd hate to get stung with a fee I wasn't expecting. usrentacar said that their website would say it clearly if there was one. I prefer the carrentals way of doing it by saying clearly that there's no fee!

I saved £100 due to skipping the insurance package with that one. others were around £100 more, car came through dollar cars btw.
  • The Signature VS Vdara. Has anyone got any recent experience (the last year or so) of both? We stayed at the Sig in 2010 and loved it, so have booked there again but now I'm wondering whether to switch the booking to try the Vdara instead. It specifically needs to be one of the non smoking hotels and we don't want the platinum mainly because we stayed there last time and want a change :-)
  • I love Signature, and have just booked another stay there. I always look at Vdara, but it is always that bit more expensive than Signature so I never book it.

Well just had a bit of a result. If you remember we never got our Social Rewards credits of $20 each added in time for our last trip because they were updating the system at the time and we were told to place the order again.
I just checked and they have added another $20 to each account. Must have been a system glitch but I'm not telling. So that's a total of $80 to spend next month.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
