    Tragic. Worried now..

Im just trying to get a hold of my brother, its very unlikely that hed be in Glasgow at that time, Im sure hes done all his xmas shopping and wouldn't be travelling in today. He doesnt always answer his phone quickly as he personal trains people, he had a day off work today so hopefully hes been PT ing people in the town he lives in, am sure he'll be fine but I'll feel better when he gets back to me.

I hope all is ok with your sons, its just awful.

I hope you're brother replies to you too. I've texted the boys as they don't usually pick up calls while working.

It'll be a relief to hear from them. What an awful thing to happen :(

Thank you. Wait until Christmas Day, there will be thread after thread of breakdowns over someone turkey not being the right size, am sure that happened last year on here.

That's part of the problem isn't it, when people set up their expectation for christmas to be all singing, all dancing, everything must be perfect and then it all goes belly up because someone finds a lump in their gravy?

I also remember saying on here last year that my mum and I got a takeaway for christmas, you would have thought that I'd put a contract out on someone's life.

Not christmas if you have a mushroom dopiaza and chips, well, it is in my world. If I had a huge family I might think differently, but my view is what is the point of sweating over a stove and we don't eat meat anyway so might as well be a takeaway dinner.

We had takeaway Chinese (or SM frozen equivalent) for New Year's Eve quite often when the children were small - only thing that everyone would eat (youngest just wanted rice) and any leftovers were added to the next day's buffet. Stopped making the traditional potato pie as the boys weren't that keen and mum would cook enough for a small army and would still be giving us panfuls of it mid-January.

I ordered Indian takeaway for my birthdays - I was the only one who ever cooked and it was the only time I got a meal cooked by someone else.

I will be alone for Christmas and I am loving it. Youngest son (23yo) has gone to his gf's family and will stay at least a week (until he can't cope with her parents any more) - if he was here he would spend all his time on the computer 'talking' to gf anyway. My turkey was cooked six weeks ago (currently recovering from a hip replacement and knew I couldn't bend to use the oven, so did it weekend before I went in to hospital) and is sliced in the freezer together with a small selection of goodies.

I have done all the family Christmases when mine were small - all the cooking and cleaning, 3 boys going hyper, 3 cats running away from the tinsel they had wrapped round themselves. One of best remembered was the year I came down at 6am on Christmas Eve to find the cats had managed to break into the turkey and nibbled away at one of the legs - since they had only eaten where they had broken through the plastic, I calmly cut out a piece 1" all round the gap and cooked the rest as usual.

If and when I have grandchildren I'd be happy to have some form of that family Christmas again, but for now I love my pared down Christmas. DS3 will eat a dinner if I throw one in his direction but is okay feasting on snacks if I don't - since I was diagnosed as diabetic I rarely eat sweets, cakes and biscuits so pick all his favourites and wrap them and hide them in a sack (used the paper recycling sack - it stopped him eating them as soon as they came in the house).

I have food. I have fizzy water and diet decaff coke (that's as exciting as my life gets - even fruit juice has to be rationed). the library home delivery service has brought me a huge pile of books. I have candles and Christmas lights and 2 'trees' made from willow garden wigwams.

I have a copy of the snowman, whatever music I choose to play and games and the Dr Who special on the computer (I can wait an extra hour). I even have a puzzle book and a jigsaw if I get bored. I have loads of embroidery now that the stressful 'must be done before Christmas' items have been delivered (was in plenty of time but got the lurgy and didn't want to pass on lurgy germs).

I have a 3year diary (originally bought in a sale to use for garden notes) which I rediscovered last year and used for my challenges. Still lots of room so I can look at each area of my life and my goals for next year and plan a strategy of how to achieve what I want without spending money.

Thinking of everyone in Glasgow tonight.

Had to go for a hospital appointment in Carlisle today...OMG it was chaos. Thankfully we have everything so don't need to go to the shops but trying to get through the city was hell on earth.

We did stop for a 'Toby' though, so that's our Christmas dinner sorted. Christmas eve we will pick up eldest from the station and have a pizza. Xmas morning it's beigels and cream cheese with bucks fizz, then all round to daughters for a buffet, a DVD (probably Frozen!) and the Dr Who special. Simple things.

My sons have been in touch too. They are fine, saying the city centre is in shock.

My thoughts also to all those involved

Pared down is good. Ive not always gone to my mums at christmas, didnt go 3 years ago, because her heating had broken down and her house was like a fridge:rotfl:But we saw one another on christmas and boxing day and I used to work christmas day, but apart from the fridge incident Ive seen her more or less every christmas day for the last 7 years. I go and stay with her for a couple of days at christmas and hogmanay as it gets interesting around these parts, I live in a housing scheme with a couple of anti social families and they party like its 1999 lets just say, so I get more peace at hers and I obviously like to see her.

I cook most of the year round and I eat healthily most of the year round so a takeaway is a treat for me, no waste either.

I live in a medium sized town around 17 miles from Glasgow and it has tons of takeaways and it would amaze you the roaring trade they all do over the festive season so it would seem like a lot of people just want to phone up and get their dinner delivered.

Theres a couple of Indian takeaways in the town and they do a meal deal which is fab value, its something like 6 quid for a meal and a can of soft drink, every day of the year from 4pm until closing time.

I used to get one once a week, back when I was teaching around 15 fitness classes a week, but its more like once a year now.

It really is just another day, if people want to make loads of fuss, fine, if people want to have beans on toast fine.

I spent the £2.82 I spent in tesco today, plus 65p for a can of coke and I gave my mum the last of my pasta, some lettuce, some broccoli and some tomatoes on the vine.

All in all not a bad low spend day. I can see me frying a lot of tomatoes tomorrow, pity I forgot to get some mushrooms when I was out earlier on.
