NOT BUYING IT! 2015 - A consumer holiday

Morning all.
DuranGirl, I work with several lovely ladies, from their twenties to my age and above. Several of them are obsessional about makeup, perfumes, clothing, handbags etc and make this their major topic of office conversation.
I like them fine as people, they're not airheads, but their interests and my interests are very divergent and I don't feel drawn to contribute into discussions about foundations etc when I haven't bothered with slap for about 30-odd years.:rotfl:
I totally understand the frustrations of hearing others of the live-to-shop persuasion burbling happily about their acquistions with never a thought that this might be offensive to colleagues or other associates who are much poorer than they are. Or who have many more demands on their money, such as being the sole breadwinner.
I don't think we'll ever get to the point where you can eliminate thoughtless people, but all you can do is rise serenely above it, like a hot air balloon floating through the evening sky.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Hello chums:j
Still sailing through the calm waters of NBI. Have been pretty busy of late turning all the foraged and grown goodies which others have given to me into food for the coming months. I stil have sloes in the freezer to make into sloe gin. That's on the hit list for this weekend.
Have just unearthed my old Singer machine. It's going to need a bobbin and no doubt some type of service but I have a few modest plans for it. I've already cut up an old sheet in preparation- I'm starting easy with pillowcases using some lace from my craft stash.
Christmas is looming so have started to think about it in a bit more detail. Am hoping to do some sort of voluntary work over the period so have been in touch with the local volunteer bureau. Gift wise I've been able to swap some survey points for a voucher for a bungee jump for my son and have got the bits together for some Christmas pud vodka to. I will buy some bits but am planning that they will either be handmade [not necessarily by me! or ethical.
That's just about me up to date news wise.

I picked up a winter sweater today in my lunch break, carried it around the store for a good 10 minutes and then put it back. It was nice and although I would have liked it I didn't really need it. Just as well as I got the news later today that my contract (which is to the end of this month) is not being extended. I will be looking for something else even if its a temp xmas job, but I am so glad that I put aside some wages during these past 6 months incase this happened and it has. Being aware of the Not Buying It thread helped me a lot. Long may the ship sail for the rest of 2015 and beyond.
Lynplatinum. Treats in a NBI way for me would include walking and admiring nature, spending time playing games with my daft old cats that involve shoelaces and cardboard boxes, baking a very slapdash but moreish apple crumble for my OH and at this time of year, watching old ghost movies.

Thanks everyone for their helpful comments and suggestions - and welcome tuskel! I have to confess that my one little luxury is a cineworld unlimited card, because I love films, and my fella and a lot of my friends have them too. With cinema tickets at £10 a throw now, I only have to see two films a month and it's "paid for itself". I usually see at least five, so maybe technically I'm not buying too many cinema tickets? :-)3-6 month EF Challenge Member #19: £3590/£6000.[/B] Craft destash from 22.5.22: 46/200. I am surprised at how easy it has become to walk round shops and hardly buy anything. A change of mindset that I hope will be permanent.2025 Decluttering Campaign 733/2025 🏅🏅🏅🏅(🏅🏅) 🌟🌟

My favourite NBI is a good book from the local library, a nice cup of fresh ground coffee and feet up indoors on a rainy afternoon with my 'blankey' round my knees, or a good play on Radio Four with my knitting.I'm really quite a cheap date
:):)
I think its because I am always rushing around doing things that my favourite day is Saturday when I usually get a whole day to myself to do what I want with I often never even step outside the door in the winter I am happy to just potter around reading or knitting and seeing no one Peace and quiet for a whole day is fantastic in my life0 -
JackieO. That,s a great example of quiet contentment! Some people are never happy unless they're spending money on something or other.
The smell of a nice casserole simmering away in the oven while the rain lashes against the windows takes some beating too, especially when you're making a double batch so next meal comes free of any gas or electricity coats!0 -
Yay just finished DDs 'blankey' all the borders done and sewn up.I watched Rush the movie about James Hunt and Nikki Lauda while finishing it off. Tonight's dinner is going to be a couple of chilli sausages from the freezer, some baked beans and some Charlotte potato's.Ironing got done as well so its been a good day
:):) NSD though as having booked my next years holiday yesterday I am keeping my purse as firmly closed as possible for as long as I can
:):) Lots of freezer stuff to use up still and plenty of stuff in the cupboards.
Tomorrow afternoon is History club which I really enjoy and keep the subs for that separately.Only thing on the shopping list at the moment is a cucumber which I can live without for awhile:):) I still have fresh tomato's and lettuce in the fridge

That's so true. I've been working from home today, so without my travelling time, I've been able to make a double batch of quorn cottage pies and a batch of OS hob nobs (can't go wrong with those). Lovely and toasty in the kitchen with the radio on. I could do this every day3-6 month EF Challenge Member #19: £3590/£6000.[/B] Craft destash from 22.5.22: 46/200.
