Sound's like a hen's paradise you'v made Edwink, wish I was close enough to bring round the outer leaves of the lettuice I picked today, as it is my friend's rabbit will enjoy a extra fresh treat tonight when I go round for the party, which, with this thread in mind I'm taking home made elderflower syrup, for us that are driving, the lettice, radish and courgette's as a salad off the garden & greenhouse and a marmalade cake.

I'v been able to stay with-in my shopping budget, just, for the last 4 week's, both me and OH have been having soar throat's/bad cough's/ cold's and OH has had a chest infection as well so I'v been cooking thing's out of freezer and cupboard, so need to restock quite a bit.

Survived my Bluewater trip without spending any cash :) tablecloths far too expensive .I looked at some trainers but £80 odd was also far too expensive I think for glorified plimpsolls :)

Came home and found a pair of Reeboks that DD had bought me when she was in the U.S., they were hiding under some stuff in my study, unused and perfect so I'm glad I never splashed out.

Had to do some shopping this morning and have bought enough to last me until the end of the month, mostly fruit and veg and a few odds and ends but it means I have over £14.90 odd to go into the holiday fund at the end of this month :):):) Only 57 more days to go :)
Clouded over this afternoon but still quite warm.have been de-cluttering my study and I'm amazed at how much junk seems to accumulatee in there.
Hope you all have had a good saturday, I'm off to put my feet up and have a read of my latest Steven King book from the Library 'Finders Keepers' Should keep me quiet for awhile
    Cheers chums

  • Evening everyone

As it was raining this morning and I was waiting for a dry spot to cycle to the shops - needed flour and canned tomatos and didn't wanted to carry that home... - I went over some messy spots in my kitchen and cleaning/linen cupboard. Binned some very old spices and one of these hair drying turbans that never worked. Plain boring towel around my head works much better. And put two books on a pile which will go to next years book exchange ;-) Why didn't I found them earlier?

In the afternoon I went over to my parents with some muffins I baked yesterday. My brother was there too and said he'll cook dinner for all of us so I stayed much longer than planned and we had lovely vegetarian curry.

Tomorrow I'll go into town for coffee and knitting with some friends, so that will be my spending of the day. And somewhen next week I'll have to buy jeans. It isn't a want, it is rather a need as my only pair is falling apart and not replacing them would mean not being able to wear blouses/shirts anymore as this is really the only pair of trousers I own (more a dress person)

Food shopping is okish, could be much better when I read Jackie etc., but I've spent fare less than last June. I normally spend more in summer due to more expensive fruit and veg like berries and tomatos compared to loads of root vegs and apples in winter.
But have everything in till Thuesday lunch beside fruits. So will have to get a melon or so and some sweets to take to work as our sweets-box is quite empty and we love to have a little treat every now and then.

Edwink, I love to read about your chickens! I'm sure they have the best life a chicken can have! Sad to hear that one of them is not well, but I'm convinced that you do all you can to make it as comfortable as possible for her.

Jackie, well done on resisting and well done on finding a pair of brand new shoes in your closet!

Did I wrote here that I had to buy a new hair dryer? Well, found out that I could have saved that money as my parents have a spare one that is almost brand new and came from our holiday house which we no longer have... Well well...
The first time I used the new one by the way the cats hide under the bed, I guess they expected it to burst in flames again...

Another silly thing... Bought batteries a while ago but can't find them anymore... No idea where I packed them, I guess I might even have accidentally binned them with all the wrapping from my new alarm clock for which I've bougth them...

Tomorrow when I come home from knitting I'll have to mend some things, have discovered some holes in two dresses. And then will maybe sit down and sew a small pouch as birthday present for a friend.

    Have a nice evening everyone!

I too had to wait for it to arrive at the local library, but its worth the wait. I am halfway through it already:) Our local library when it gets new books do a two week quick-loan and most people when they get one read it straight away so the queue goes down fairly quickly. My copy will be back in the library by Tuesday at the latest :):):)
Just have to do my menu's for this week,no shopping to buy as its all bought now for the month:)

    Ahoy there

I am back from deepest Cornwall - and not being very NBI as I think I may have found my ideal hobbit-hole down there to move to. Good thing is - if I get what I expect for this place - the move could wipe all my debts - I would be mortgage free as well! Place is smaller than this which now feels far too big for just me and I have wanted to move back home to Cornwall for years, however - upon returning home - I am so used to this house and it is all cosy and comfy - and it will be a lot of hassle and dealing with Sharks AKA Estate agents and solicitors. Hmmmm - sometimes having options is not always a good thing LOL ;)

Anyway re shoes (especially for Jackie O) I did not think that the Sket!hers ones looked right for me - I cant wear canvass topped ones for example. all of the Cl!rks etc varieties were either v frumpy or had no grip on the soles. (for those who dont know - I slipped over last July and broke my leg so I am a bit neurotic about footwear being 'safe' . I was getting v hot feet in recent weather so was about to give in and buy Ecc!o @ £80-£100!!!

~However, I had one last desperate hope - Brant!nos - I walked to my local one and got some lookie like Ech!o for £19 in their sale!! Good solid shoe with really grippy undersoles - yet strappy and quite pretty (OK not the killer heels I would like to be able to wear but............) On the first day of purchase - and yes you can call me stupid - I walked miles round Penzance with them on!! Result - one little sore bit but not bad.

So this NBI as in not believing that the big companies are the only way!! :j

The £61 saved may well have to go into my 'moving' account - I have managed to save £1500 in there since January and hopefully, will be able to keep it going and by next Jan get the 7% interest!! (Fr!rst D1rect - one year lock in ISA)

Also NBI - took my own sani for food on the way down (and own water in a bottle) and on the way back I checked out the Petrol station - thinking £3 meal deal (Still cheaper than food on the motorway!) and found a nice ham, cheese and mustard sani YSed to 55p!! RESULT!! :T

    Frugaly on folks

Lynplatinum sounds like you have foud the ideal shoes. I am a great believer in 'Happy Feet' = Happy Jackie :):):).

Donations are starting to come in already for our 'Race for Life' and I thanks everyone who has sent something. My youngest DGS Mikey says he wants to walk with me when we do it, so I will be OK and not fall over or anything :):):) Bless him he is my little shadow.I have him for two days this week at my house as his school have two teacher training days tacked onto the weekend .Today I think we may be baking as he enjoys doing that. The weather is a bit grotty at the moment with a slight shower but I don't think it will last.
No food shopping to buy at all this week, and tonights dinner will be a freezer dive to see what I can find.
Hope you all have a great day whatever you are doing

    Shipmates,

I have made it! Been round entire ship, met all the crew, read all the posts on this thread....and only on board since 6th May.

It is an education itself on the NBI ship. In fact recycled certificates should be given out. And lots of laughs along the way.

So far I have continued with mindful spending ( must do anyway as money in down by 3/4). Funnily enough it is amazing what you don't need to buy. And not being in work saves money on clothes, petrol, office melarkey
nonsesnse. Not to mention less stress about 'work'.

Have also found the Be More With Less website... my type of thing.....simple living. I don't hoard, but still manage to have stuff to go to cc. Looked at Kondo page too. Next stops are make do and mend & Mr. MM. Read a link on here from Mr MM and lol at the 'sheeple'. So true.

Today made spicy carrot and pepper soup, with a plain pizza garnished with lots of leftover gammon & mushroooms. Did some washing, pottered, read a little, had a siesta (need one nearly every day) and generally enjoyed the lovely day.

The 1 thing I do always need is heat....unless having a tropical moment. My ailments and medication play havoc with my immune system. Always like to have funds for heating. And my want but not need is chocolate :).

Don't you wonder what all the hamster wheel stuff is about? And how we become conditioned to buy into it?
Work hard, buy stuff, buy more stuff, buy bigger house with garage, work harder to pay for it all! Like blinkered horses racing for the prizes of exhaustion, debt, stuff and life literally passing you by.

It has taken my health condition......and a few years for me to accept imposed limitations....to finally see the nonsense of it all.

People ask me 'are you not bored'?, because I am not in 'work'. NO.I.AM.NOT.BORED. (not shouting btw :) ). Read, listen to radio, watch TV, try new cheap easy recipes, chat, look out at nature, go to local parks, dogs for daytime companions, planning short free outings etc.

Watched TV programme about island off Japan where inhabitants live very long lives. They put it down to diet, lifestyle, companionship etc. 2 sisters in their 70's went sea fishing in caves in the dark and in their bare feet for.......snakes! Community dancing, bowls, trades...fabulous way of life. Not a hamster wheel in sight.

JackieO, Grey Queen, nursemaggie.....love the posts. And Langleys mummy too. In fact all crew seem to have passed the friendly helpful tesr before boarding.

Let me know of other friendly ships, ports, islands to visit too. Don't do hassle and noise :)

    Ahoy All

Well, in the spirit of potentially selling house + trying to get it better to live in - am trying to redecorate my kitchen this week!! (A friend of my son's kindly took down the dreadful dying cupboards - and put up a big strong shelf in their place - this left holes that have been filled and where the cupboards were painted round - so needed decorating anyway!!)

So went to shed to audit materials - there were my large cans of paint (5ltr) all with labels facing this way - washed brushes rollers and paint trays -white spirit in bottles - all upright and sealed! I put all of this away - the other renovating stuff (screws; nails; saws; masking tape - all thrown in a an uncleaned out bucket - the boys 'put this away' LOL :) So, even 2 years ago I was NBI - I wont need to buy paint/brushes/rollers/ paint trays etc!!!

Agnesjr - I think it was kind of a back lash from the 2 wars + the depression - when everyone was so very poor and had so little. Then for the first time we had massive research into feeding/clothing/supplying an increasing population during the baby boom years - which increased the production capabilities of companies. Then came the biggest influence of all - advertising via radio/tv/internet. I am sure that many of you know that adverts dont happen by accident - there is research to show that, for example, we eat faster in a red room. Hence the early McDs had a lot of red in their restaurants - so they got more people through them faster - so earning more money!!! Some of the research into people's behaviour is really fascinating but scary!! how easily we can be manipulated !!! Although I know all this - i still fall for the tricks sometimes!! Then it became the norm - to want and to buy rather than Make Do and Mend.

    What do others think??!

Incidentally Agnesjr Make Do and Mend (MM&M) thread is also very very friendly and full of so many tips and if you need help there is always someone who knows the answer!!
    Enjoy!!

Lucky you lyn, planning to move to Cornwall. So beautiful there. Only been once but loved it. Where I live now I say we have the best bits of the uk all squashed into a tiny space. We have the beautiful golden sandy beaches, we have the cliffs and caves. We have the glens we have great surf. The only thing we don't have is the weather lol

Seriously it's been that cold that I've had to light a fire in the evenings, or sit under a blanket. We had sun yesterday but also very strong winds, strong enough to have to fight to open the door. Hopefully we will get a summer at some point else I'm going to have to book a holiday somewhere hot

The chooks have landed :). Four 3 month old New Hampshire Reds:). They are beautiful. Just getting there colourings coming through, when mature they will be striking. They seem to like their coop and run and have sorted out their pecking order. There's a defined leader although another one does try and challenge her,but a few spars and it's back to cuddling up together :). We introduced our dog to them yesterday:eek: bit hairy at first but he soon ignored them Need him and them to be able to get along as we do intend on letting them free range as much as possible. Introducing the 18 month old will be the next challenge lol. Edwinks home for her chooks sounds amazing, I'm afraid I can't supply all that, but she's been really helpful in pm and I'm going to be picking her brains even more :)

I'm officially off sick :(. First time in 7 years of working where I am now :(. And to top it off it was Father's Day I had to blow out :(. I feel dreadful about not being in. Silly I know because I'm not fit to work and have been only managing whilst dosed up to the eyeballs on painkillers. So now my stomach is on fire and my arm is pure agony. Can't sleep lying down, can't dress myself, can't drive. However I can eat chocolate and read lol. So on a two week course of steroids and a weeks rest so fingers crossed I'll be back at work next week

That's after we go see Neil Diamond at the Oddessy. Our Christmas pressie to each other. I'm so excited about going. Never in all my 50 years have I been to a concert. So as this really will be a once in a lifetime we have pushed the boat out and got VIP tickets which includes a meal and drinks before hand and I booked a hotel for the night. It's still really no spend as it was all paid for last year and it is our Christmas pressie. Did I mention I was excited ?:j:j:beer::rotfl:

So enforced being at home means no spending :T and no popping out for that vital ingredient so dinners will be a bit mish mash this week. Lots in, just no fresh veg or salad. Still it won't kill us to have tinned or do without for a few days. I can't wait for our veg plot to catch up and start producing. Everything is growing, just at least a month behind. Tomatoes which are indoors haven't even produced a flower yet. Still the spuds will be ready soon so not all bad :)
