Thanks for the welcome boultdj
I'm hoping this thread and its participants will help me to maintain my relatively-new-to-me, 'save not spend' mantra.
I literally have cravings to spend money, usually on something i convince myself I should buy, especially if it's something I want and it's on special offer.
And yet my home is full of stuff already and I don't actually need more.
Various things are simmering away at the moment: I'm doing reasonably well with savings challenges I have signed up for on MSE, I have also laboured long and hard over meal plans for the next month and have bought much of what we need to stick with those plans.
So, I'm doing more, and the fact I am persevering and not just giving up on the challenges etc, is spurring me on to keep It going.
I've always been a spender and not a saver, but that's gradually changing. My quite small savings since new year have enabled me to pay for all sorts of unforeseen, but necessary expenditures in these few weeks an months since christmas. No using my overdraft. Even if I never have substantial savings, if I can continue to pay my way out of difficulties without getting into any kind of debt, then I will be really pleased.:staradmin: June NSD's 2/19:staradmin: Sealed Pot #460 :staradmin: £/day £185 saved :staradmin: W.S.C 2015 #45 :staradmin: F.P. 2/24 months :staradmin:0 -
Meal planning is something I'v got to get back into, today's job though is soup for the freezer, got 4 different type's I can make from leftover, so will take a leaf out of MG's book and freeze concentrated disk's for later use..........now where are the muffin case's?£71.93/ £180.000

Someone save me.......please!!
My lawn mower broke beyond repair 2 years ago and I was talked into buying a hover mower by my dad....I hate the thing!
I cut the grass yesterday and the feelings of hatred returned, have now reserved a new one for collection this afternoon....someone needs to convince me not to collect it!
I'm annoyed as I have a reputation of not replacing anything unless it's broke...buying a replacement when I have a fully functional but horrible machine is going against the grain :rotfl:0 -
pm,it will give you joy.end of.Sell the one you don't like. You have not wasted money elsewhere so you can have something you will really like.I am sure this is the advice you would give to someone else.
50p's .The one with the pagoda from Kew on the back was going for £300 last year.I keep forgetting to look in my change.
Clothes hanger challenge is throwing up some interesting things.Like you I wear 10% of my clothes. Some have gone in the car boot pile already.Having the empty drawer has helped with underwear.I am washing and returning to the empty drawer. So have worn stuff I have had for YEARS.I have no clue what I was saving them for.So under my scruffs I am very fancy indeed! And 21 days later I have still not worn them all yet!
RL still a bit grueling for me at the moment. It isn't helped by me over thinking.Grrrr .I have done all I can to help though but this one will run and run.It is taking some major readjusting in my head and will be a lifelong thing.I am sure all will be well in the end when I have got used to it.
Eldest daughters new beau came round yesterday so they could walk to a spot to watch the eclipse.Yes we will have him.He talked and laughed and was just lovely.
We have a house viewing on Monday.I am going to tell you a joke now.I will get the last wardrobe door finished and put back on before then.Hahahahahaha.
Yesterday was patchwork club.I am the youngest by years but everyone is so nice. The patchwork is very very close to completion.I am removing and replacing some of the squares at the moment.Ones that have faded over the last 40 years I have been making it.When this is done I can sew the back on.
That reminds me,well done on the Elvis pic, that is epic.Knocks the couple of samplers that Iv'e done into a cocked hat.
Better get on and do something.

Hi Pm
In your defence I would sell it and go and collect the new one this afternoon. I know this is not what you would normally do but why not just this once. If you really hate the one you have at the moment you will not want to mow your lawn every time it needs mowing. It will make mowing the lawn a almost stressful chore too!!!
So I say GO GET THE NEW ONE THIS AFTERNOON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pm - sell it on gumtree or fb and go buy a new one. Last year hubby bought a ride on mower, not factoring in that he was away in England most the year so I had to pay someone to come mow the lawns. So this year we sold it on gumtree for a very good price and got a mulching mower that I can use. I wanted a mulcher as getting rid of the grass is a nightmare in its self
Ok so I've looked on pin what's it and I'm lost lol. How does that site work?
Hubby's flight is booked. Hopefully he's only going to be away for 3 or 4 weeks max. Got a bit tearful about him going when chatting to a colleague about it. Still what he earns in four weeks there would take four months here, if he could get a job so needs must
Thanks for the tip about the 50ps Edwink. I have found 8 collectables in the
Jar. I shall be paying more attention to my coins from now on. I have a collection of money boxes on my head board. We save all coins from 20p up in separate ones and the " shrapnel" goes into another two which the grandchildren get when they visit. Grandson loves opening his and counting it out and loves even more when he gets to take it to the machine to be exchanged. I know coin star take a percentage but he loves the ritual of tipping in a bag of coins and seeing it all being counted. Now he's getting up a bit I will look at opening a saving account for him to go pay some of it into. Do banks or building societies do the books anymore? I used to love seeing the amount in my book grow each month
Was so disappointed that we never saw the eclipse here as it was so cloudy. We did experience the darkness and the chill. I loved the footage from the BBC plane over Faro. Stunning.
Hopefully this week won't be hard on the purse. I'm working every night this week so that gives me plenty of time in the days to get meals made and keep me out of town Have to go into town this morning to get the meat and veg we need for the week. No groceries needed as I've a good store cupboard Will need diesel some point this week as I have the airport run to do and then I need to tax the small car so I can use that for the short journeys to and from work. I have had it sorn since end of the summer to save money but it's time to get her out of mothballs
I also need to re list some things on gumtree. Had some success on there with big items but a lot of time wasters and a lot of mails ending up in junk mail so missed a couple of potential sales also going to go through the car boot stuff, get it priced and boxed ready for when hubby gets back. While he's away I'm going to have sort through his drawer of " stuff" - men's toys and things his picked up and really has no need of - like a box of cuff links when he doesn't own a cuffed shirt lol
Welcome aboard Hoipolloi0 -
I played this same game in January, it's interesting what you can find to wear which normally gets overlooked, isn't it? Think I need to get all the stuff off my hanging rail, which is 32 inches wide, if memory serves - it is across an alcove in my bedroom. Want to check and make sure blouses aren't hiding up among the jackets, many things are black or otherwise dark, and can get confused.
I also seem to have gone from an insufficiency to a glut of hangers, I may well sort out the best ones to keep and get rid of a few.
It was amazing how many hangers I ended up with after I decluttered my wardrobe. I still have loads of them as I kept the better ones but I would find it hard to describe what clothes I got rid of now, even though there were bags of them donated or recycled.:pHOUSE MOVE FUND £16,000/ £19,000

Hi Everyone :wave::wave:
I've been quite busy over the past week. I must make a note to log onto this thread more and join in more than I have as its such a friendly one.
The positives for me this month are :-
Financially I'm up to date with everything, my shopping came under budget by £4.90 so I'm combining this with last months underspend and keeping it as an emergency fund/treats fund as I don't buy any treats in my shopping.
Petrol, again under budget so that's also going into a fund where I'll have more money to get out and about in my car. I went out on a trip yesterday by myself ( I've never done this before as I'm now newly single and before that I used to go out with friends and if they couldn't make it I wouldn't go). So i've forced myself go get out and about more.
I've just hit the "big birthday" this week but I didn't want a fuss. I've arranged a few things to do in the year rather than have a big party. I'm quiet and a party would've filled me with dread and stress of, who would actually turn up, or who would know who. So I polietly declined all offers and spent the day chilling after a week of catching up with each friend individually.
I joined a dating site, but I'm not sure its for me. Luckily I don't look my age (other peoples opinions, not mine). But as of yet I'm unsure of wanting to get involved with anyone after the disasters I've had. I've had 2 men ask to meet me, and although they look ok and seem ok, I'm a bit wary.. Maybe that means I'm not ready. I'm a bit spontaneous, so I know when the time comes I will know, and for now I doesn't.
So with my finances in order and my home kondoed, friends and family all visited I'm going to sit with a cuppa and read what everyone on here's been up to. And make a mental note to join in as sometimes I can feel a bit lonely (as I'm used to being around people) but I now realise I need to be content in my own company and leave everyone's dramas behind and think what makes me happy..:)0 -
Just back from shopping and seeing as I was on my own and could potter around a bit, I popped into the wool shop to ask about knitting classes and have found out there are three classes/groups in the town so will investigate more during the week. I think I'd like to have a go with knitting as it doesn't need loads of money to get started. I do know the basics like casting on and I have very vague memories of knitting a tube type dress for a Sindy doll many many moons ago
Shopping bill was the grand total of £27 for a weeks meals for the three of us. Getting used to going straight to lidl to get what's needed instead of tesco. Less choice but then we don't buy much from the supermarkets anyway seeing as I scratch cook every day
Oh and I treated myself to a beautiful new to me jumper from the charity shop which is from a store I wouldn't shop in usually cos of the costs. £2. I know spring is officially here but it's still bloody cold
Imdoingitforme belated birthday wishes. I think you are doing the right thing in taking time to be comfortable with your own company. Do keep posting on here, I myself noticed your absence0
