NOT BUYING IT! 2015 - A consumer holiday

I used to wash things far more frequently than I do now. Scrundies go in wash every day and 1st layer tshirts/tops for DH and DS10 as they need it. DH has a long walk and then commute into London for work and needs a clean shirt every day. DS10 is getting to the sweaty teenage stage, just a couple of years early! Dish cloth and teetowel also changed every day. Blankets and throws regularly washed as we have cats who like to sleep on them - they refuse to have their own pet bedding naturally! Change handtowels more regularly then bath, sheets more quickly in summer and so on, whatever is sensible. I retrieve discarded jumpers and trousers from kids all the time. They just sling them in the wash basket as that is the easiest option. However saying all of this, is something needs washing is does get washed.
Gosh I, well we have a lot to say about washing. DH likes to joke its my hobby! Hmmmmm. On the subject of his lordship, he is off work sick and starting to feel better and wants to go to a supermarket today to "pick up a few things". We could do with bread but not much else as I went yesterday to stock up. This is NOT good news for our bank balance.0 -

The other topical item in the media that caught my eye was Mylene Klass tweeting a picture of her school round robin email on people giving £10 per childs birthday present, instead of a gift. Have you all heard about this?
Essentially a couple of Mums got together & said to the parents in their kids class, please dont all give a gift that the child may not want, she wants a Kindle, and the other child wants a desk. Send £10 each please.
Mylene then replied to the group something facicous like, 'my daughter wants a unicorn, please send unicorn money to...'
Apparently this all happened last year, but Mylene has chosen to wait until now to break it, which some of the Mums involved speculated may be down to her dwindling publicity.
On the face of it, I agree with her opinion, although maybe not deciding to shame people from your school, that help out picking up your child each day, and are going to see you daily for the rest of your time at the school.
What do others think?
I havent physically spent money on another childs birthday gift in months. I keep an eye on incoming gifts at christmas and birthdays and stash away anything I can see isnt going to be a hit with my child, but is a nice gift to pass along. I re use wrapping paper, & have my child make a home made card.
I agree the class party thing is insane, 30 kids all inviting each other to 30 parties potentially, but I would feel queasy suggesting strangers, which are what most of the other kids parents are in effect, donated money to my childs gift fund." Your vibe attracts your tribe":D

There is five of us, I'm washing every day and often extra loads at the weekend. The basket is never empty. Have now uped DS1(sweaty teenager) to a fresh shirt every day as his collars were disgraceful! I'm have been experimenting with homemade washing powder.( got recipes from net). It's ok for most stuff but I'm not convinced the whites are coming up as good as they could be, will continue to monitor.
Currently meal planning for the next two weeks and booking the Asd@ shop. Looking like a biggie as we are low on some staples, rice, pasta etc
Anyone else tried home made washing powder?Busymumofthreeplusdog......

Afternoon everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I love hearing about the chicken stories you all have. I used to keep ducks so it brings back a lot of memories
A few spends for us this week. I had to go up to London which meant forking out a fortune for my train ticket and contactless payment (even with a railcard). We also just did a big shop and got petrol as DH is going to the US for business tomorrow so I needed to get some food in.
We also did a big shop for the in laws as they had just got back from travelling for three months and were very grateful.
Other than that we have been quite good and have been enjoying the free things in life such as bird watching down by the local river where we saw cormorants, grey wagtails and little grebes which was brilliant!
I'm working all weekend so should be no spends there, but next week I need to buy some work trousers. I have an M&S voucher to use so that should cover most of the cost.
I hope you all have a great weekend!0 -

Hi Busymumofthree
I have made homemade washing detergent which turned out very well. I used to make it in bulk as it was easier and stored it in 2 litre milk cartons ready for use!! Also used to make fabric conditioner, which is so easy to make also!!! I have not made any for a while because my hens started to take over my time plus the veg growing. My health is not good at all so I do have limited energy to get all the things done that I want to do!! But I shall get back in to making it again!!
I am more than happy to post both recipes on here if anyone would like to have a go at making their own. Also I have a fab recipe for Elderflower cordial if anyone would like me to post that on here. It is so much better for you than shop bought rubbish and soooo much cheaper. I freeze mine when I have made a batch in small bottles that you can buy water in!! I then get out a bottle at a time and defrost it in the fridge and use it over the week in the hot summer months!! If you have Elderflower trees near to where you live it is well worth making!!
Let me know if any of you would like the recipes!!! Back to reading the rest of the thread now!!

Ahoy shipmates
Not been able to read or post for a while so I have a lot of catching up to do, hopefully tonight after work
Just wanted to post quickly now. January went so well for me in terms of not buying it, that my £100 savings actually touched £500:j:beer:
However it's gone downhill since then
Firstly I skidded on the ice coming home from work and wrecked a tyre and dented the alloy. As it's rear wheel, both rear tyres had to be replaced £ 300. The alloy was fit to use but hubby is not happy so I need to find £450 for a new one on the next month or so
Coal bill was another £100. Hopefully that will see us through till the warmer weather. We have had snow and ice for the past two weeks so the stoves been lit all day
And today it was £95 at the dentist. Still have more work to get done so think that's going to be doubled at least
And it's hubby's birthday tomorrow and I've not got him even a card yet
Still it's not all bad news. He had a decent tax rebate :j and I've started selling a few items on gtree. Just added £50 to the house insurance pot and have some interest in a couple of other items
And I've been doing a lot of RM surveys and just received a pile of love to shop vouchers and enough stamps to see me through the year
Work wise I'm still getting plenty of hours, we are really going well for the time of year, and I'm now baking at home for them as well so that's a few more hours a week.
I will be back to catch up with you all ASAP Hope everyone is doing well
Take care xx0 -
