  • Candygirl, hope you have good news at the vets tomorrow and your dog is ok. It's always a worry, I know.

The booze + ice cream ideas sound delicious! I always add a drop of whisky/bourbon/rum (whatever I can find) to cakes if I'm baking. I had some dregs left in various bottles and gradually used them up in cakes.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.

So did a bit of totalling up for January. Food (includes toiletries, cleaning stuff, loo roll etc - cos I'm too lazy to extrapolate ( oh, is that the right word) all the little costs) £419.15 - which is under my aim of £450. This also included party good for DDs birthday sleepover. So I don't think this is too bad, although I'd like to get it down further.

Fuel for cars is a bit more than usual but big car was fuelled this week and should last 3weeks.
Unnecessary spends not bad but I feel I could do better.

Feel like I've just been guddling and not really taking this seriously. However after watching Martins programme on Friday I am determined to make over payments on the mortgage! To this end I have started writing down absolutely every penny spent this month and I'm having an alcohol free month( not that that will save a fortune as I don't drink that much.

Thanks for all the Hoover suggestions. I'm continuing with my research and in meantime making use of tiny second Hoover which is rubbish but better than nowt! I am really torn between a Henry and the Gtech.
So it's hoist up the rigging(?) and set sail for another month but this time of major frugality.

  • I spent quite a lot today but it was money I had set aside to pay for flights, got a return from Glasgow to palma for 126 quid, those were the easy ones, the ones for later in the year were eye watering, 200 quid one way with the same airline so thought sod that, flying from Gatwick was 39 quid, hotel the night before was 35 and I'll get down to London cheaply, 66 on the way back to Glasgow, booked my transfers, 15 pounds on the first trip and 10 on the other and going to get euros while the pound is strong, I go all inclusive so have been known to spend 30 euros in a week.

If I didn't go anywhere I'd live, didn't go abroad for years, but a week all inclusive does me.

Also bought two Groupon type meals for a local hotel, but that's 11.25 for a three course lunch for two plus glass of wine each. My mum and I eat out now and then and we always try and do it on a budget but that's as cheap as you'll get around here and its good food, we always leave a tip as well. They probably don't make much from that offer but its always jam packed and they'll get repeat business at full price no doubt.

  • I'm also going to try and organise a clothes swap night through the meet up group I run so people can bring along unwanted clothes and see if people would swap them. I've still got lots to get rid of, so might be an idea to get it organized for a couple of months time.

Evening shipmates - just a quick check in before the bunk calls - had an NSD today and menu planned up until the 10th Feb then it gets a bit hazy, going to follow JackieO and aim for fiscal fast for 7 days to get creative.
Katkin - I love your chair and have serious buffet envy - I would smile every day too, what a lovely job you and DH did - thank you this has motivated me to do some work on an old bureau that has been waiting for some TLC and plan to use a HM chalk paint as the wood is really not that fab but the piece has good bones and is quite solid, materials assembled!

Purpleshoes - well done on the travel deals, its amazing how much the cost varies?

Plan to make use of three ripening (okay black) bananas tomorrow in a date and banana tea loaf for the brood to take to work in packed lunches and me with a cup of tea.

Hope all sleep well on the good ship NBI may we all slumber well

Yes ma'am! Insurance was included - but not listed! And now you've got me looking at local car hire companies: you've created a monster I tell you:p
:D If the OH gives you grief, you can blame 'that bliddy woman on the internet' - my back is broad, I shan't mind.

Oooh, what a lovely makeover on that chair, I am intruiged by its shape, those curved legs, can see why you love it. Well done!

Going to work today with my YS packups and then will return my library book. Just got an email from the library a fes seconds ago, was excitedly hoping it was one of the reservations, but it was a reminder to return a book by Thurs that I'm returning today anyway, on account of having read it cover-to-cover yesterday.

I'm picking up again on my knitting, turning pulled out jumper into a HWB cover to replace a damaged one. Looking good.

    Morning shipmates

I have been given a small sewing machine :) As I am useless at sewing I have been checking out how to make napkins on the net. Got to start somewhere :) Also fancy making some of those lace modesty panels to go under low cut tops. Let you know how I get on. Will check out the make do and mend board too.
February food budget should be low as plenty in. Will put some baking potatoes in soon and a curry then portion some up for freezer.
    Have a nice day everyone.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.
