Normal or OCD

OK
Some background here.
Both just into 70s,
Retired in small bungalow and comfortable.
I wonder at some of my wife’s foibles.
1: Have a leather recliner from IKEA for 11 years which has not been allowed to be sat in without a throw on it.
The plastic covering on the footrest has been on for 10 years before I was finally allowed to remove it as it was finally collapsing.
2: Bathroom light cord has cling film to keep it clean.
Always removed when people call.
3: Not allowed to enter house by front door.
Always have to wait for my wife to open garage door for me to enter even when we are coming home together.
4: Anything on my work desk has to be aligned each night.
5: We have a kitchen table which has protective coating to enable hot cups to be placed on it.
We have a thin table cloth in four thicknesses with a thick table cloth also 4 thicknesses and place mats on top of that even when we have cold meals.
I could offer more examples but would welcome opinions.

Sounds like ocd to me. You're not allowed through the front door? How does your wife get into the house?

She'd hate my husbands desk, it's always messy!
  • It does sound very much like OCD behaviour. As long as it doesn't encroach on her (and your) day to day life to such an extent that it cause a major disruption or so that you are worried for your wife's mental health, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I too suffer from OCD, things have to be a certain way, certain routines etc, which are worse if I'm under a lot of stress. But like I mentioned above, it doesn't affect my day to day life, and my husband is great, he understands like I don't think many people would! I think to a certain extent, he's even got a touch of it himself.

Don't get me (and I'm sure, my OCD sis HazyJo) started, or you'll wish you'd never started the thread! I'm sure we had MrToads head spinning last time!

Sounds very much like OCD yes. Don't take it personally; she can't help it. :)

Have you mentioned it to her?

Doesn't sound that bad to me - have you no little foibles? Apart from believing you're not allowed to do this, that and the other?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I would find it odd that she is allowed in the front door but you are not and would not be happy with someone dictating how my desk looked (so long as it wasn't stuff falling off all over the floor etc.)

I'm considering doing that now you mention it. Keeps the cord clean when covered, later protects household members from any germs left by others.

Only if you change the cling film after every use surely?
In all the decades I've been alive, I've not been aware of ever suffering from 'germs' picked up from a bathroom light cord vs absolutely everything else we touch in a shared living space.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I thought that post was out of order too.

The behaviour of the OP's wife is clearly unusual.
