Win 7/forgotten password

My wife has forgotten her password for her laptop running Windows 7. I've googled the problem but all you get is a load of smart Alex's trotting out the same stuff, but who appear to be unable to read plain and simple English. I think most of them are from the other side of the Atlantic!
So the plain and simple bit is: starting in Safe mode is no solution as all the options simply take you to the login screen, where a password is required. This is the password which has been forgotten!!
So can any of the tech geniuses, or should that be genii, around here give me a solution, as I've got the job of sorting it out, as usual!
According to my wife, this happened after one of out grandkids closed/shut down the laptop, so whether they didn't do it properly, or if coincidentally my wife's 'account' has been corrupted, I don't know.
And obviously, we have no discs which could rectify the problem, although my main pc is running Win 7.

Use Offline NT Password and Registry Editor which needs to be burnt to a CD or a USB Flash drive so that the software is bootable.
Please read the website carefully. When you boot the CD or Flash drive, taking all the defaults for the questions usually works, and you end up with the Administrator password being removed so that there is NO Administrator password. You can continue on from there by booting Windows, and so on.
I've used this ever so many times for as long as I can remember!0 -
Thanks for your help so far folks. One wee question, does either of the options offered so far result in the contents of the laptop's HD being deleted?David.0

I've tried to go this route John, not sure if I've done everything correctly, but having put the USB stick in the laptop I eventually got a window on the screen headed, "Password Reset Wizard".
However, although the USB drive is in the box in the centre of this window, when I click 'Next' I get a message, "This disk is not a password reset disc".
I don't know whether it's relevant or not, but the drive box has "KINGSTON", the name of the USB drive, then (F) after it. Now the 'F' is the drive letter given to it when I was preparing it on my pc, but does that also apply to the laptop?David.0 -
no , you have to boot from the usb stick to run the program0

Right, think I've now got the booting from the USB drive sorted, but I've now ended up with a screen headed up with "Freecom version 0.84............." etc etc, and ending with a command prompt, "C:\>". Putting in "F:" after the prompt comes up with "Invalid drive F:"David.0 -
you hav,nt booted from the usb stick properly or have "burnt" the disc incorrectly to the pendrive.
set your bios to boot from the USB , and try again , it might be easier to download the CD version , follow the information on burning , and run that0 -
umm the programme is supposed to run from a cd , usb PENDRIVE not a usb hard drive0
