  • I got a lovely long coat from my charity shop for £5, good as new, it says pure wool and the label says 100% pure wool, can't do better than that can you? I hope to not only be smart but toasty warm too in the winter this year.

    Jealous, much:D

It's really hard to get pure wool even if you are prepared to pay. I have a 20 year old Loden style coat in wool which would see me all right in Siberia it's so warm and windproof but it's full length and not really practical for wearing with jeans and in the car
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I do like snow but I'm glad we have two weeks somewhere warm in January - although it would be just our luck if flights are grounded for bad weather

Ha! My friend and I drive out to the Alps in January for a couple of weeks - our issue is that the ferry can occasionally be a bit lumpy and then you go to sleep bumping up and down on your bunk!

In other prep news today I went into the loft and did a winter/summer clothes transfer and picked the last two courgettes in the garden. Now waiting for the next sunny day to get the snow tyres/wheels on, although as we're using her vehicle not much call for them really in sunny 'Ampshire, although they are a lot safer in dodgy weather.

Thanks for the info on the Weather without technology site, some very interesting reading there and really makes sense to me to follow what nature is up to and has planned. I've never been a gardener but since getting our allotment last year and now a very mature garden I'm beginning to see subtle changes that I shall start keeping track of.

Thanks for the WWT link, seems to be a very gentle man and is very easy to read his site. Reminds me of an old farmer friend, he always went by nature and barometer for doing his harvesting. He died in his 80s, chasing a poacher down a lane, big ex-boxer, low growling voice, was an excellent horse person and if he praised any of us, well it made us stand tall and proud. He charged us buttons for tack and wore an old coat tied with string. kept a pig and had mice in his house

So I might be adapting to the weather at last, have wanted to turn all the zones down by a whole degree, now on 20 downstairs 24/7 except for a short boost to 21 for breakfast time, might reduce that soon. Stove is super and I treated myself to an electric firelighter, no more spitting kindling or firelighters or even matches. Had the stove on yesterday, so easy to light and clean that I don`t hesitate to put it on now

We're still trying to figure out how high to have the rads etc as everything has been in left in winter mode and too hot. When we get it just right there will be a note going into my housekeeping book ready for next autumn. I'll look at it again come January and note that too.

Climate change might scupper my plans, however. :(

  • It's been a very wet couple of days in Sheffield. Flooded streets about 15 minutes walk from the house, fortunately I'm on a hill & walk to work but a lot of people struggled to get home last night.
    Stay safe, everyone.
  • It's bitter here tonight, shiveringly cold and we have the most beautiful display of stars in the heavens. I hope we're all prepared because I think winter is here!
  • It is so cold today and grey and pouring down and I must be getting something because I cannot get warm. I could light the fire but candles will do for now, in spite of the heating being on all the time. The actual room temperature is fine but body says cold. Must make sure that I have the winter meds in and enough quick food and soups, lurgies just love winter
