Preparing for Winter V

pattypan4, the same here. The temp has dropped considerably. Although, it has thankfully stopped raining. I'm staying in today whilst the flooded roads get cleared. Shopping can wait til tomorrow.
The house is at 16c, the dehumidifier is pumping away at full speed due to all the rain soaking the walls & it just feels a lot colder than it has done over the past few weeks. Think I'll be having soup & a roll for lunch & getting the heating on a bit earlier this afternoon - after I've run round with the hoover.0 -
There was a decent frost this morning, the shed roofs were white and glistening and then it started raining which made it slightly warmer but not much. I have got out my goose down duvet coats, my boots and boot socks and my lined sheepskin gloves and as a consequence the walk to the co op this morning was warmer than it might have been. We've the rugby this afternoon and that will be cold too so I've found my wool throw to take to go over my knees, I shall make a flask of nice hot tea to take for half time and I've started a beef stew in the slow cooker so we have a nice hot meal ready for supper when we get back this evening. Stove is laid and ready to light too, lovely stuff!0

It has turned decidedly chilly and bitter here today. I have had my halogen heater out and still might need a hot water bottle.
There is a weather warning for heavy rain here later.
I'm making spag bol for dinner and I might also make a batch lot of soup as the cooker being on heats the kitchen and downstairs up a bit.0 -
Scots weather forum beginning to get excited re colder stuff coming - and they all seem to be going skiing for the Christmas holidays, they love snow in there. Like me
We had a dusting overnight, and a nice frosty morning now. We seem to have rotten coal this week, it's not glowiing red at all just sitting there black and sullen. Goin to moan at the coalman next time.

The wood we're burning on the stove is a but 'sullen' too Mar, despite having seasoned for over a year I think the damp we've all had from this persistently wet autumn has made even stored logs take in moisture and we're having to be very firm with it to get it lit. Mind, once it's away they burn OK.0

Its very sunny but cold here in Essex. I'm currently washing the dog blankets so they are getting hung on the line just to get the hair off it nothing else lol. It is very windy again so I hope they stay on the washing line! Our heating is finally on as well (we try and hold off as long as we can and try not to put it on before 1st November but we made it to this weekend this year as it hasn't been that cold). It only comes on in the morning to take the chill off and again in the evening and the thermostat is currently set to 16oC which is enough for now. As the weeks go on and the weather changes it will go up.
I need to get some stocks of food in (tinned and frozen) and have plenty of flour etc for bread. If it snows I am sure we will be ok. I learnt to drive in the snow so I am not too worried about the need to drive but our road is on a slope and most of the time you can get out the road but not back in! I have some decent boots for the snow so can walk to the local town/shops - although that's all well and good if they've had deliveries!
My mum and me make sure my Nan has everything she needs as she lives in a small village and that is usually cut off from the world! There are a lot of new younger families moving in around her (previously it was all elderly people) so I know they will also make sure she is ok. A couple of our neighbours are elderly or poorly so we always sort them out. A group of us clear the paths which always helps everyone regardless of age.
I need to make some draught sausages to put at the bottom of the curtains which are all over the radiators to ensure we keep the maximum amount of heat in each room. I also need curtains to go over our front and back doors. I think thats about it although I also have loads to do in the garden and really REALLY need to cut the grass once before the weather completely changes as its far too long.2 adults and 3 children DD (14), DD (12) & DS (10) :smileyhea and 2 mental beagles.
Paying off debt bit by bit0 -
I've now got more curtain ring's to go on the pole over the door, so now got a door curtain up as well. Should help to keep the heat in.£71.93/ £180.000
