exactly the same here primrose. First thing I did was put a curtain pole over the half glazed front door. Drawn in high summer and again as soon as the lights go on

The trees are turning, I saw some beautiful red acers today. Oh and that zip firelog was lit and it was good, I ended up putting some bits of fuel on top. However it wasn`t a clean flame and my stove window needs a clean. I might get a couple in, no more than that, good for perhaps, ill days

I spent an hour or so 'tidying' in the garden yesterday. Cut back some buddleias and willows that we intend removing during the winter. (Green bin due on Friday so like to make sure that it's full!) It's a good idea anyway to cut them down about halfway so they don't rock when the strong winds start.
I enjoyed being outside and have added a few more jobs to my mental list! It's encouraged me to get out there today if the weather's dry. Might need a coat though, it got quite chilly by mid afternoon!
We do have a compost heap and a leaf mould collection but to be honest, it's getting to be a lot of work!

Got wet snow forecast for here I think Fri night into Sat morning. Here we go..
  • It seems that I have the flu, which has revealed a gap in my preps. I had bought loads of boxes of lemsip type things because OH likes them and he is prone to colds, but I don't like them and as I rarely get ill I hadn't got any cold & flu tablets. OH duly brought me some home yesterday. Came down with it two days before I was due to get my jab, naturally!

The other thing that has been brought to my attention is preparing for multiple things to go wrong. For example, normally if I were ill we would eat microwave food or something that I'd meal-prepped and stashed in the freezer. But our microwave recently died and we are moving house in 2 weeks, so we've been eating up everything out of the freezer. Need more backup plans!

  • There's been a bit of a frost at 8am when I've been walking to work these last two weeks. I'm quite impressed with the £20 puffy coat I bought from Decathlon. I didn't think it would be much good in winter but I've been perfectly warm whilst walking to work in it when the temp has supposedly been 3c.
Although I'm not sure it would be comfortable in freezing temperatures, I can layer up by adding a waterproof jacket which helps keep more heat in & I do have a heavy duty sailing jacket I'd get out of the wardrobe for really prolonged cold spells.

The heating has been set to cycle on & off by the timer/thermostat & it's coming on but getting the house to temp pretty quickly as it's still warm enough indoors.

I'm looking forward to the clocks changing & some really cold weather, I just love that cosy feeling of coming home to a warm house.
  • I have the heating on but I have been feeling really chilly in the afternoons so the fleecy socks have gone on!:)

When do the clocks change? Fall back, spring forward. Thanks Grandma for that memory twig.

The temps are definately nose diving Mar, tops of 8 degrees over the weekend here so it will be a bit bleak should the rain that's coming here turn to snow up thy hill.

I had further logs and kindling delivered. They're in a wood store with air able to circulate but I have covered with tarpaulin to keep the rain from hitting the wood. It galls me to put kiln dried wood outdoors but needs must. I get praise for burning right every year from the sweep. We never have much in the way of tar build up so I'm doing OK in terms of the end game even if the process is a bit counter intuitive.

I need to get DH a car box gathered. He works 15 mins away but it's all hills to home. I also need Bachs herbal remedies in to help me cope with the nerves of having all family out at school and work when the snow hits our hill. Its closed quickly. Access is dangerous but thankfully we're on a main gritting and plough route so it's never down long. Still, hairy times sometimes.
  • We've had the stove alight this evening for the first time and it's gorgeously warm in the lounge, 11 degrees and falling outside and due to be foggy in the morning.....welcome to autumn xxx.
  • I hung up winter curtains at the weekend and put brushed cotton sheets on the bed along with a heavier duvet. Also bought myself two pairs of fleece pyjamas at £8 each, after reading about them on this website. They are sooooo cosy!

Having recently moved house I'm trying to do winter prep in a new place. Already checked the boiler and radiators to make sure they are in working order with no cold spots. As my partner and I moved two houses into one we now have two slow cookers, my huge one and his little one, which has actually been really handy for cooking small gammon joints and the like.

We've put up curtains in the living room across the bay window and we've got a couple of blankets around in case of chilly evenings. Next up to test is the electric fire in the living room. Never had one of those, so will leave it to DP to sort out.

The only conundrum I have is the conservatory which gets quite chilly. We've put down a rug in there and that's helped a bit. Unfortunately we can't just close it off as the utility room comes off of it.
