Preparing for Winter V

Grape jelly stirs something within me. Do OSers think that berry based jellys could be used in stews that call for red or white wine?
I may be late to the party as it's my first season where I've been able to get out and about but at the risk of others not knowing Heron Foods and B&M (same company I believe) have 2 packs of 48 firelighters for £2. Hope to help.0 -
Yes, I chuck in redcurrant or bramble jelly if I don't have grape and they all work well, they add in a richness to the casserole gravy/sauce and just make things richer in taste.0

Has anyone ever used zip firelogs? I saw them on a shelf in waitrose, supposed to burn for up to 90 minutes. They look like giant firelighters. Might be worth me getting some in for `those` days0

One of the newspapers was reporting imminent snow & a harsh winter again.
So far, my heating has been mostly off & I've still got the summer duvet, topped with a thin fleece blanket, on the bed.
The inside (no heating on) temp has dropped from about 18.5c to 17c, so this weekend I'll be putting the winter duvet back on & getting the door curtains washed and hung back up ready.0 -
I wish they would make their blimming minds up about the weather. They`re keeping it close to their chests. I haven`t put a match to my zip firelog yet, it is tempting me, sitting in the grate. Might be worth me buying more, not sure0

For the first time today I had to dig out my hat and gloves because it was so chilly first thing this morning and also a nice warm scarf as we went out for a walk in the country and we were quite high up and it was windy, padded jacket too I add.....I think the year has turned the corner into real Autumn.0

I have had my wool hat out for a week, I have been so cold!
Working from home today and had a roaring fire all day. Just bitten the bullet and ordered a 1000l oil which should see us through to end of March fingers crossed.
We had stew here yesterday too so it is definitely Autumn...
I have ordered my MIL an electric throw off Amazon to keep her toasty while she is watching TV0 -
We have a UPVC front door with glazed windows in the upper half. Nevertheless we still have a thick full length old velour curtain we draw across it at night once we've "pulled up the drawbridge" for the evening. It,s surprising how much difference it seems to make in heat level in our front lobby where our central heating thermostat is located.
Similarly in hot summers where we get the afternoon sun blazing in, drawing that curtain really reduces the temperature and as hot air rises straight up the stairs it helps to keep the upstairs cooler too.0
