Cornwall had it's warning lifted, it's cold but nothing like the local media been harping on about for days, it rarely is in Cornwall.
Glad you got off ok grrenbee, we had a similar issue with Heathrow in 09 ended up being shifted to Luton in the middle of the night and flying from there as Heathrow couldn't fly after a certain time
  • Snow flurries here yesterday evening when we drove home but nothing on the ground. -3 outside this morning but sunshine and beautiful blue sky but the forecast says we may get showers later on today and tomorrow. The real potential disruption will come on Thursday in the form of storm 'Emma' which is coming up from the continent and will bring blizzards over the whole of the south if they've got the forecast right.

We have separate duvets as I sleep hotter than He Who Knows, we have a continental king size bed with 2 x separate single mattresses on it and run with 2 x single quilts usually of different tog but both at 15tog just now. Continental duvets are very well made and ours were relatively expensive when we bought them almost 30 years ago but they are still as good as the day be got them and if you want quality find some German made ones, you'll pay a lot for them but it will be well worth it!

The snow ploughs did a great job at getting the roads clear for the school/work traffic. I pick up youngest (on foot 5 minutes) up at 1pm and I'm hoping the comprehensive does the same with the school transport. We have about 4 inches. We've got heavy snow tomorrow and Thursday, possibly Friday and the rest of the week until Monday is light showers. Overnight and into tomorrow will be the worst here.

Life is going on as normal. Preps are flask of hot water, just incase. Cleared pathways and able to open shed, coal store doors and gate. DH has food/drink, extra layers, shovel and a bit of carpet in the car. The eldest is coat and booted and fully charged phone. Extra socks etc incase she has a walk ahead of her but unlikely to happen and the ploughs/gritters are on the roads every couple of hours. The rest is already in place. I'm calm... but looking forward to having my family all in doors this evening.
  • I popped to the co-op this morning for some furniture spray as I've been cleaning bedroom furniture and used up a can. Goodness me there is serious panic buying going on and very depleted shelves in there. I got an extra bottle of milk and half a dozen eggs too because they'll keep long enough to be used in time. Snow is never that bad here, I've only known one fall some years ago that lasted more than half a day on the ground. I love that weather forecasters can be looking so far ahead in the predictions but I wish people would actually listen to what is forecast in their locality and not the general forecast before thinking the worse is going to happen everywhere. It's good to take precautions and be ready but panic buying? no!

I haven't entered a store extra.to.my usual shop but only on principle and had we still consumed a loaf of bread a day I would have been buying bread. I don't think I would panic buy though, I think I would just be getting a loaf to use and a loaf tin freeze to get me through.

I just think I spend a lot of time trying to be organised and prep for this type of scenario (We are under amber warnings for snow) that it seems senseless to fret about it and buy more along with the masses who are slipping in the car parks and stroppy because they haven't the luxury of choice because of panic buying before them. So I'm staying confident. I have to have done enough to not have egg on my face (or maybe not if I run out!) but we shall see.
  • Smug smile, I got an extra half dozen this morning so I'll send you one if you do!!!

Been on and off all day here, got a bit over 2" but a lot of drifting in that wind. Wee birds very hungry and getting brave. The worst here is tomorrow and Thursday.
Fuddle the whole idea of prepping, to me, is to take care of things before the last minute, so we can sit back in the warm when everybody else is out in the cold wet crowded shops. I don't buy extra either but I do buy an extra week's stuff. If that makes sense which I don't think it does :D
  • Me too, I'd much rather NOT be a part of any problems if a little forethought and planning ahead can be done. I see making preparation as an 'investment', supplies and equipment cost money but they are things that we use everyday anyway so having in extra amounts isn't going to waste our income. Equipment in the form of the wood stove and cooking equipment I use on her cost lots of money but has kept us warm without the central heating for the past 10 or so years that we've had it and that has saved us money. The wood we get as much 'wombled' wood as we can find and are lucky enough to qualify for the winter fuel allowance because of our ages and we invest that in wood for the store. If it snows I know that even if the power goes out we'll be warm and fed for as long as it takes to thaw and repair the grid and get the electricity on again and hopefully no one else will have to have a hand in that except the two of us.

  • We may be 'Old Bats' but we're not 'Daft Old Bats' are we?, there's a bit of common sense in our psyche's and outlook that is oft mocked by unbelievers but I know what I'd rather have when the chips are down and that's stuff to keep us going throughout a problem period and other folks opinions are their own and no bother to me! Preparing in any form seems way preferable to being uncomfortable.

Car pics on the Prepping thread are awesome Witless!
