Tesco Credit Card Balance Transfer Application Problem

Hi,

I've just tried to apply for a Tesco 0% balance transfer card to pay off the balance on another card.

Tesco accepted my application without any issues and I got to the point in the application where I needed to add in the card details I wanted to transfer the balance from.

However when I entered the details it said it did not accept or could not verify that card number, so I had no choice but to cancel the application.

I've now tried to apply for another 0% card from Lloyds but I have been rejected.... could this be because Tesco did a credit check but I didn't complete the application?

If so, is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks in advance!

  • Could be because of that, could be because of a load of other reasons. You would have been better off continuing the application and then just phoning up Tesco and asking them to do the BT over the phone.

You could try phoning Tesco and seeing if they'll reconsider you if you explain your circumstances, but they used to have a very strict 6-month wait policy.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

I agree with PP and would probably have rung Tesco to do it over the phone. Just wondering is the CC in your name or are you an additional card holder. If the latter this could explain why they could not verify it online.

  • Ah ok, thank you, yes phoning them up probably would have been the more sensible option. Wish I'd of thought of that at the time. I didn't realise I could continue the application without giving them the other account details.

I tried two different CC's, both in my name with current address, so I'm really not sure why they couldn't be verified.

What I'm worried about is if cancelling the application midway through would affect me being able to apply for other balance transfer cards - is this possible?

I was going to apply for another one from TSB today but I'm not sure if I should or if I should or not now?

Thank you for you help so far.

I would hang off at the moment until you find out how far the application went with Tesco. It is probably showing on your CR and also the rejection from Lloyds so several rejections will cause a vicious circle. Give things time to settle down and/or speak to Tesco to explain what happened and see if they have a solution for you.

    Good luck

Rejections are not explicitly shown on your file. You will have two searches recorded though, one for Tesco, one for Lloyds. It's the number and frequency of searches that have an impact.

This is where your error was

Tesco is unable to pay certain cards, including BA Amexes (despite being able to pay Amex Charge cards), which is where you would encounter that error

You can also make BTs online once you have activated the card

Put much better than I did, meant the searches would show rather than the rejections. http://static.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_smilies/speechless-smiley-040.gif

Well there are 2 issues here, one is that Tesco won't BT from a card in someone else's name. But if you lied and said it was in your name, maybe it would have worked.

Second is perhaps they won't BT from an M&S cards at all, which could be because they don't have the payment details for M&S cards set up on their system.
  • Quick update here - I spoke to Tesco over the phone and apparently they have difficulties verifying Virgin Money cards over the internet. They can however take these cards normally so they will be sending me paperwork in the post so I can complete the application.

Thanks all for your help! It is much appreciated.
