I think joint housey Christmas presents from family or people you both know are nice. We asked for a lovely kettle and toaster last year, and I quite often ask for housey things like cushions, etc which we don't want to go out and spend the dosh on.

I wouldn't mind a light fryer thingy from say my mum, or a chopping board from my sister as a birthday present, but I think from your OH, it's just not the same, especially when you both live in the same house! Mind you, I will be buying my OH a tapas cookery book for Christmas :D

Hope he got you a little personal something too OP :)

In fairness this isn't male-specific. Some people are better at buying gifts than others. Personally I've never been disappointed by what my H2B has bought me. I once told him an incredibly pathetic story about giving away a much-loved toy as a child and assumed he wasn't paying much attention at the time. He bought me a replacement for my next birthday. It wasn't the right version admittedly, but I was touched he went to so much effort, contacting various vintage toy dealers until he found one that matched the dates.

I think it's all about the intent really. If it was well intended, accept it gratefully and tell him what you want next year so there's no disappointment. Personally I like practical gifts as I will use them and it saves me money, but I appreciate a personal gift means more, especially on a big birthday. Maybe treat yourself to a shopping trip and buy something you like as a present to yourself? He may well suggest you do that next year so it saves him the hassle of guessing and you get what you want.
  • I would be overjoyed to get a slow cooker. Some people's partners aren't nearly as thoughtful. I got a small candle the other year. A candle.

This past 2 years I received a big food processor blendery thing, and a mixer. I've not used them very much but I loved them.
    I can't add up.

I don't really get the problem. I always get stuff for the home whereas boyfriend gets things for himself. Bit unfair but at least my house looks nice! :)

My sister has been with her boyfriend for perhaps four months now. He's renowned as being a little tight, but they're still very much in the honeymoon phase.

They were in GAME the other day when my sister saw a particular game she wanted at the princely sum of £6. She said to him that she would buy it later for herself and off they trotted.

Lo and behold at dinner that night, he is very pleased with himself, presents her with said game, still in the bag with the receipt, "Here, I got this for you for Christmas, but I thought you could have it early." She asked him whether this was it for Christmas and he apparently looked very confused and asked why wouldn't it be!!

Now, part of me thinks, well he was paying attention and got her something she liked, but the other part of me thinks what a tight a*se!

An ex of mine got me a car cleaning kit for my birthday

My biggest regret is that we split up a few weeks before her birthday. I was so looking forward to getting her a pack of washing up sponges and a bottle of fairy :rotfl:

My best friend's brother has asked for this for his birthday next week, some people like that sort of thing :)

Some people are really ungrateful :/

I'm sure some people do want cleaning products for their birthday, but unless you're certain that's what they want, I'd suggest they're not the most romantic present to get your partner!
