I work in a small office with 6 others, one of my colleagues is a Muslim - should I give him a Christmas card? I don't want to exclude him but also don't want to offend - he is coming to the Christmas meal. I have some generic non-religious ones and I'm thinking of giving one of those with a comment saying 'have a happy winter break' or holidays but really don't want to be rude.

    So would you:
    a) Give him a Christmas card with a non-religious comment/picture
    b) give him a Christmas card, he will appreciate the thought
    c) Don't give him one under any circumstances
    d) something else?

Most Christmas cards these days don't have a religious comment or picture, so it should be easy to avoid those.

I would either ask him or ask the others in the office what would be appropriate, because it varies from person to person. I had a friend who was a Jehovahs Witness and she was not allowed to receive birthday or Christmas cards, or to sing hymns. Then again, my Jewish friend was perfectly happy to get Christmas cards.

They go straight from envelope to recycling bin in this house!

Will you still do that when your daughter brings home Christmas cards from her school friends?

Not likely to happen this year, but if and when she does get any she can decide for herself.

  • Can't you send colleagues and e-card instead? That way you don't harm the environment.

I used to work with a Muslim lady who thoroughly enjoyed all the Christmas festivities. Our neighbours are Sikh and we exchange gifts with them. Our children also make them Easter cakes which they love.

Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet, so I don't see why anyone would be offended by you celebrating his birth. They don't believe he was the son of god.

A muslim colleague of mine bought cakes in the office to celebrate the end of Ramadan, and I make a point of wishing muslims eid mubarak at that time.

I'm not at all religious, but I do think its courteous to respect other people's customs.

I have this vision of your daughter growing up and becoming one of these people who celebrate Christmas every day of the year :rotfl::rotfl:
  • I live in a Muslim country atm and they love celebrating Christmas! :)
