I bought a USB 3 external back up drive and because I didn't have any USB 3 ports on my computer I bought this.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005LV3Z0A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

After fitting it, I can no longer access the BIOS using a USB keyboard, still plugged into it's usual socket, by tapping F12 yet a psp keyboard works and once booted the USB keyboard works.

Is my new USB 3 adapter faulty or could it have changed something in the BIOS?

Also I cannot find an email address for teckonline

I need to access the BIOS on boot up as I have 2 OS's on 2 separate hard drives, Windows 8.1 on a SSD and Windows 7 on a mechanical drive which I use because my printer does not work with Windows 8.

Solved, a BIOS update fixed it. :j

FWIW I fitted a USB3 card, did nothing whatsover with any settings and have no trouble getting in with a USB keyboard. Mind you my keyboard is still in a USB2 port.

Sounds like some obscure bug to me rather than operator error. I'd try the keyboard in every port to see if it will work. I'm assuming it still works once the thing is booted up.

I would have suggested updating the BIOS as these types of issues are usually addressed with BIOS updates but you've already done that.

It seems to me that the new card is overruling/conflicting with the standard USB connectors on boot, which only become active once you get to Windows. Do you have a PS2 port on your motherboard which you can plug the keyboard into (you'll also need an adapter)?

Have you removed the card to see if it re-enables BIOS access? If it still doesnt work after removing the card, then I would consider resetting the CMOS.

I would think bios because, it is one of a few things: bios, drivers, old o/s, or duff card.

I had a similar issue. Ended up wiping the o/s, put on the latest drivers and the latest bios and it still did not work for me.

My latest bios was dated 2006? and this type of hardware would not have been known then. HP has stopped supporting this PC around 2008

The one I bought had a VIA VL800 based usb3 chip set

While plenty of other USB problems may well be down to operating system or drivers etc. the reported issue can't possibly have anything at all to do with them. The diversion from booting from disk/usb/etc. into the CMOS settings code is all part of the startup routine in the BIOS and there isn't even a byte of operating system code in memory at that point.

    Yes.

    Yes.

It also works properly in another computer.

  • How about resetting the BIOS using the jumper on the motherboard, reflashing, then resetting one final time?

Failing that, do you have other PCI express slots you could try it in?

As poppellerant suggests, try a different PCI slot, but if it works in windows.....

So what happens when you try to access the BIOS using a keyboard plugged into the PS2 port?
