If so, it's deffo possible. Mines is the 6 speed box though, but motorway cruising at 60mph is high 70's and mixture of motorway 70mph / town i get just over 60mpg
Is that trip computer mpg or real mpg? I'm a little sceptical that you really get high 70s (based on driving my Octavia with the same engine, which has a massively overoptimistic trip computer).0 -
That's from the trip computer.
The Ibiza is a fair bit lighter than the Octavia i imagine though. All your base are belong to us.0 -

Weight difference is about 1200 kg for the Ibiza to 1300 kg for the Octavia (according to Parkers, which I was just sad enough to check...) My car is also 5-speed not 6-speed which will help you.
My car overestimates economy by more than 10 mpg, and from the numbers you have posted on this thread I'm afraid I think your car may be doing something similar. Data from the Honest John real mpg website also suggests your figures are rather optimistic I'm afraid, giving an average of 56.2 mpg for an Ibiza vs 54.2 mpg for an Octavia. (My own average is currently 56 mpg, and the best I've ever got is 70 mpg in very favourable summer weather at 60 mph max., with more typical summer trips at this speed being in the 65-68 mpg range.)
If you can confirm yours brim-to-brim then I'll stand corrected, but for now I suspect that suggesting to the OP that high 70s mpg is easily achievable is probably misleading I'm afraid.0 -
You're right.
My trip meter shows 63 mpg average over a full tank.
Checking this i get roughly 460 miles for 39 litres which works out around 53mpg real world mpg
Back to OP, before i got this i was looking closely at the other cars i mentioned
1.4TDi Polo / Ibiza
1.5 Turbo diesel Yaris.
These should see real world 60+mpg
Personally, i'd go for the Yaris if you can find one for that price. All your base are belong to us.0 -
The Yaris is 1.4, but it does do good mpg. I reckon if I stayed at 60mph I'd get about 75mpg, maybe even 80.0

Sorry to be the one to break it to you! I remember being very disappointed when I checked the real mpg on my first tank, but it's still a good engine that for me offers an excellent combination of performance, economy and reliability

I am considering all options and will take on board all the feedback.
It's a very good point about trip computers giving false information, I test drove a Suzuki Swift recently and the trip computer told me I had got 93 MPG out of it! I know I have a very light right foot but not that light!
I'm very sensitive to MPG as I do a lot of miles so even a 5 MPG difference means £30 or so a month difference in costs.
Thanks again everyone.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080
