Finding an old diesel in good shape is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Try and find one without injector issues, faulty turbo, fuel pump problems, dmf needs replacing etc.

I did, I went vag 1.9 tdi (for the 3rd time).

I've only ever used old diesels myself.
Most old diesels i used, never had turbos or DMF's to worry about.

The VAG 1.9TDi is a good engine as mentioned a few times in this thread, but for money saving the 1.4TDi is a bit better. Not as fast or as torquey, but cheaper tax, insurance and slightly better fuel on motorway and much better around town.
It's the same block mould more or less to the 1.9TDi except it has 1 less piston and shorter crankshaft.

  • VAG 1,9tdi would also include skoda's but they alll seem to have a dmf, If you really know what you're looking for then it's ok but if like most people you don't spot the problems on high mile diesels it can be costly.

I too am tempted to go for a old diesel after driving them for over 6 years and now driving a petrol as i miss the torque and the fuel economy.

    VAG includes Ibizas as well.
I've got an FR TDI with 140+bhp, 111k and still averages 60+mpg over a full tank.

DMF had a slight rumble when i bought it 18 months ago with 97k and it still has a little life left in it the now. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the original one though.

Wouldn't touch a used, old French car with a barge pole. Too many problems, especially with their electrics.

Try to find an older vw/audi 1.9 tdi.

Getting about 50-55mpg out of a 1.9 ibiza, so a little short of the op's hope of 60.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

    I bought a Yaris 1.4 D4D last year.

    I've averaged 65mpg and it doesn't have a dmf.

Nonsense. There's plenty if you have any idea what you're looking for.

    I can't say I've ever had a problem.

What exactly have you been looking at?

    Is it a TDi Ibiza?
If so, it's deffo possible. Mines is the 6 speed box though, but motorway cruising at 60mph is high 70's and mixture of motorway 70mph / town i get just over 60mpg
