High MPG Car for ~£1,500
Comments

My Golf TDI came in at around £800 and does 50+ mpg. Plenty available for under £1500.
Just don't worry about mileage, far more important to check condition and service records.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Worry free bangernomics.
Oh and it would be a lot comfier than any of those little things your looking at for doing 30k mikes a year in.
Inclined to agree go cheaper, get a good breakdown package, buy twice if needed.
spend all you money and no back up.0 -

TBF, the site does say,Micks Motors Opened on 30th June 2008, selling used cars for under £2000. We are now stocking and sourcing cars upto £40000 -
Mondeo is a good shout, I had one a few years ago and it was a good car.
Would prefer better MPG though, but it's worth considering.
I had an old Pug 306 (M reg) recently as well and to be honest didn't find it any more tiring to drive than the Mondy even on my regular 3 hr drive. Averaged over 50 MPG.
Sadly bits started falling off it so had to get rid, cost me £500 and 6 months later (and 18k miles) got rid for £200 so quite happy with that depreciation.
Thanks for all the comments so far.

We had one of these bought new on a 55 plate. In seven years of ownership it never missed a beat, even after I took it swimming :embarasse
Took it all round the country towing a smallish trailer and with a roof box with no problems.
Only ever had routine servicing/maintenance and passed all MOTs with no problems.
Be aware that the indicator and wiper stalks are on the opposite side than usual (they did change that with later model years) but you soon get used to that.

Peugeot / Saxo 1.5d - Very slow, not very luxurious but cheap as chips to service / maintain and not as unreliable as the usual Citroen or Peugeot stuff. Older ones are very basic so no need to worry about ECU, DMF or turbo problems because they don't have any of that.
The ones that do have an ECU isn't anything complicated like today's stuff.
Would avoid the Corsa 1.3CDTi as they use a fiat engine that becomes fragile with age & miles.
The 1.7Dti is a much more reliable one as it uses an Isuzu inspired engine.
Personally i'd go for a Yaris 1.5 turbo diesel, or a Ibiza, Polo 1.4 turbo diesel. They see easily 70+mpg on a motorway run and are a lot faster, and comfier than the 106 / SaxoAll your base are belong to us.0 -
I thought at the time the Fiat diesel technology was pack leader?
Not much experience of them though.
Mate's always surprises me for how nippy it is, no need to work it, goes without lag and returns massive mpg despite his boost-brake driving style.0 -
Thanks. Quite a few coming up at high 70s MPG on the motorway, this will be fine. I realise I'll not be able to achieve that but high 60s in real life is OK.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080
