Thanks very much to all who replied with advice to my OP about 'long-running script'.
I haven't completed all the steps but things are running so much quicker and smoother after the ones I've done that I think I'll leave it there for now. I know what to do now should the problem resurface.
Only had the 'long-running script' twice over the weekend (both times on the same website) so the problem might not be entirely mine. I was getting it dozens of times a day before I asked for your help.
If I ever have any more techie problems I won't be too embarrassed to ask for help next time. Thanks a million.
