Help please with slow-loading pages

Sorry to ask for help about something that may be blindingly obvious but it's baffling and annoying me more and more and any advice would save my sanity.

It only used to happen with Amazon (for whatever reason I don't know) but now it is occurring more and more, today being Amazon, Mumsnet and BT:mad:

Whenever I try to access the site/page either typing directly into my browser window or by clicking a link I just get a blank page. The circle 'thing' spins in the bar at the top of the page to suggest it is connecting and eventually a small box appears at the bottom of the page saying 'Mumsnet.com' (or whatever site I'm trying to access)'is not responding due to a long-running script'. After several tries it sometimes works but often I have to restart my computer first before I get anywhere.

I have no idea what a 'long-running script' is and how/where to adjust any settings in IE to remedy it. I'm running Windows 7, IE 11 and until the past month or so never had this problem. I haven't changed any settings and I empty my cache very frequently.

I'd be so grateful if someone could spare a few minutes to put me out of my misery. Thank you.

What add-ons do you have installed, and more importantly, enabled? (Go to Tools | Manage Add-ons).
  • Thanks very much for your reply, Susan. I have the jerky, slow scrolling problem too but as its the lesser of the two evils I can live with that (just) and didn't bother to mention it. Sounds like our problems are identical so lets hope someone with some techie knowledge can sort things out for us soon.

If anyone replies to your post please could you let me know just in case I don't see it myself? I'll do the same for you.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
It looks as if I have:

    Nectar Toolbar (Disabled)

    Enabled:
Adobe: Shockwave Flash Object (I think this is Active X control???)
    McAfee: Site Advisor Toolbar
    McAfee: Site Advisor BHO
    BT Toolbar
    Oracle: Java Plug-in SSV Helper

    That's all that's showing up
  • I've noticed yesterday and today, these forum pages are taking longer than normal to load.

I had this yesterday (on these forums) a reboot cured it for me.

Also for the past 2 days had problems posting, tried to post the above and got the "Less than 10 characters" message and the text disappeared  just had to retype it.

hummm also does it if I click the "Go Advanced" button. So I've retyped this twice now . . . double :mad:

I listed my add-ons earlier today in response to bod1467's post but I don't know what they prove as he/she hasn't replied yet. Those add-ons have been there for months with no problems and the slow loading pages and 'long-running script' messages have started much more recently.
Good Luck in finding a solution:beer:

Perhaps begin with running Malwarebytes AntiMalware and then selecting to remove all issues found.

Run AdwCleaner and later Junkware Removal Tool. Go through each Tab and select to remove all that is found.

You can use CCleaner to disable Startup items. Install CCleaner then choose to Run Cleaner. Once complete. Go to the Tools section of the CCleaner interface. Tools > Startup. Then click on the first entry on the list and then press and hold CTRL. Whilst holding it down press the A key. All the entries should now be selected. Now click on the Disable button to the right. It should change all of the Yes entries to No. Now re-boot.
You should also reset your Browser.
  • Thanks very much indeed, NiftyDigits, for the very comprehensive reply.

It looks a bit complicated, do I have to do everything you mentioned in your list?

Yes, one by one, perhaps also rebooting after each step. (MBAM, reboot, ADW, reboot, JRT, reboot, etc.)

As a minimum reset your browser.

There's nothing particularly obvious in the list of add-ons. I just asked in case there was something that would be a resource hog.
