Central Heating On 24/7

Well, indeed having it on for one hour a day would be cheaper than having it on for 2, 6, 10 or 24.
To be rather ridiculous, the cheapest is not to have it on at all, and take no account of human factors! I don't think that is what this debate is about.
In the situation I described, 2 fit adults "needed" a certain level of comfort for a considerable number of hours most days, and on a variable basis. This wasn't as warm as someone frail or vulnerable would have needed, and couldn't be predicted as easily as anyone working regular hours.
And on as direct a comparison as could be made, it was BOTH cheaper and more comfortable than constantly re-making the fire.
I have posted in these debates because I thought I had helpful experience to offer. However, I note that in this particular thread, I get no thanks, and others do, so I conclude that my experience it is not regarded as helpful this time, and I retire!0 -

On the subject of 'what this debate is about', the OP asked the simplest of questions; namely:Is it cheaper to leave the Heating on 24/7 rather then turning it on each day?
The answer is absolutely straightforward - 24/7 heating is not cheaper than timed. That is not an opinion, it is a statement of fact supported by the laws of physics.
Other posters have given perfectly valid(IMO) analogies(kettle/car) to illustrate the principle.
You seem to disagree with those analogies and concentrate on introducing some 'human factors' that require heating to be on 24/7 or bring convenience into the equation.
As for your lack of 'thanks' in this thread, IMO people tend to click the 'Thanks' button as a shorthand method of agreeing with a post. Could it be people feel your posts are not relevant to the OP's question and tend to muddy the waters?0 -

A point I made elsewhere. Arguing that it is cheaper to leave heating on 24/7 only serves to confuse the FACT that it is not.
These debates come up every year and go around in circles. The bottom line still remains. Not needed, turn it off! We only have one planet to live on currently, so let's not trash it in the short time we are here.0 -
i intentionally freeze myself because im a tight git. extreme cheapskate. i vow not to use any heating till its 0c outside lols.
puts 5th layer on + hugs duvet0 -

How naïve. Where do you think 'green taxes' go - straight into the pockets of the rich, just look at how many of the governments advisory panel have been investigated or had to step down because they're making money out of it.
Or climate green change minister Ed Daftey who decided to dodge the 'green taxes' that he set up.
The government is going to step in and restrict energy, that is what smart meters are for. But they will be exempt.
You just keep paying the taxes all by different names, green tax, tax, duty, APD, VAT, insurance tax and tax on tax such as petrol/diesel.
Whilst the likes of google, starbucks, ebay et al, don't pay any tax. Then wonder why you're still struggling and the economy is stuffed.0 -

My company has insulated 100s of homes, installed renewable technologies replacing 100s of fossil fuel heating systems, installed modern efficient boilers in 100s of homes, and am at the planning stages of building a 2.5mw anaerobic digester. And I will continue doing so for the rest of my working life.
Although I am a massive fan of everything Eco And put my money where my mouth is in regards to my business and my properties (homes and BTLs), I have no bad feeling about driving round in my gas guzzling Range Rover and wasting energy on luxuries because imo I have more than offset it.
Your idea of setting a number of kW/hs and gallons of petrol per household is laughable!
What the government should be doing, is legislating efficiencies of technology not consumption. So insulating more homes And businesses, replacing old inefficient boilers with new, Incentivising renewables and making all cars more efficient etc etc.
The reality is people are wasteful and no one is ever going to stop that, and if everything was super energy efficient and a high majority of energy came from renewables it wouldn't matter so much if people were wasteful."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -

When I am emperor, everyone have to live in a commune, enclosed in a giant well insulated green house dome, housing hundreds, or more.
All rooms have a presence sensor, so is not lit and is kept at a minimum temperature until someone comes in.
No disposable cutlery and Styrofoam containers. You must eat in canteens/restaurants, where all utensils are washed and re-used.
The council will provide electric buses/trams. You can walk/cycle to local transport hubs to rent fuel cell/plug-in cars, or driverless cars can come to you. Private vehicles are only for display purposes like a piano in a nouveau riche house where no one can play the piano. There will still be trains, planes, ships etc. for long distance travel.
The population level will be reduced to a more sustainable level as soon as possible. X-Factor will be a gladiatorial event, where the contestants will be energy wasters who have been condemned to fight for their lives.0 -
