Upset by Sky

I am currently on maternity leave and called sky yesterday and today to try and reduce the price of the package - currently pay £61.50 just for TV including sky sports.

The two reps I spoke to yesterday and today gave me the option to cancel the HD package which is £10.25 pm and to add multi room with a £10 discout making it £51 approx. The rep today confused matters by saying he could do it for £42 for 10 months but would have to renew for 12 months.

Chatted with hubby and decided that we don't need or want multi room. Therefore emailed them to cancel as didn't want to phone again.

About 10 mins after hitting send, sky called me. The guy was very nice (typical salesman) to start with and was offering my packages without HD and adding movies and this that and the other but the bill was only coming down by 1 or 2 pounds.
He seemed to turn a bit funny and the conversation took a turn for the worse when I said I didn't really want the sports package removing. The guy then said, "if it was me, I would get your husband to put the kids first and cancel the sports to make it cheaper so they can watch Disney junior"

As you can imagine, I was left quite upset by the implication of my husband (who works in excess of 60 hrs a week) not putting our children first. Sky sports is his only 'treat' and doesn't buy anything else for himself.

Sorry for the long-winded story - but what do you think I should do now? We really don't want to cancel as we don't have an aerial and would need to get one installed. Also, when I was on maternity leave with my first child (4 years ago) I was given 9 months at half price. I mentioned this and it fell on deaf ears.

I feel like we should cancel on principal of being so insulted!

Its irrelevant what some faceless worker in a caller sent said about your viewing habits, they are working long hours talking to hundreds of people maybe he made a mistake or a joke, why take a financial decision based on that?

When/if you cancel the package your Sky stb will still work for viewing a lot of the channels, just not for recording.

If you want to record you will not need an aerial fitted just buy a freesat PVR it will work from the Sky feeds.

If you do just want the same deal cheaper then do not phone to negotiate a cheaper price just call to cancel, at some point in the cancellation process you may get a better deal.

I wouldn't get too upset - its quite easy on here to amend something before hitting the post button; not so easy to undo a spoken comment ... surely you have said something before and instantly wished you hadn't? I know I have. I think "will you marry me?" was one of my "favourite" ones!

you don't need an aerial so long as you have a sky box you will still pick up all the free channels .Sometimes to get the best deals you need to cancel and see what they offer .

  • thank you for replying, I was quite upset and it wasn't just the comment about my husband, the conversation had gone on for 40 minutes and I felt like he was beginning to pressure me. As I say he was really nice to start with and something just seemed to go wrong! Anyway, at the end of the day, it's only telly! I'm still sensitive, tired and hormonal! on another day I may not have even noticed what he said.

Cancel* on the basis that you can't afford Sky. Put half the money aside each month and treat yourselves. Meanwhile, as stated above, your Sky Digibox will continue to provide all the basic programmes.

*I'm assuming that you are out of contract and therefore able to cancel on 30 days' notice. Do it by "Signed For" post. Don't waste a phone call because you'll only end up being harassed by another salesman who will lock you into a new 12 month contract.

This is really the ONLY reason the OP should be considering cancellation.

Don't forget - you can cancel via online chat - can be long winded -but at least you can make a cup of coffee, listen to music etc whilst they are inventing new reasons for you not to cancel:rotfl: - and once the cancellation is processed you can sit back and wait for the offer YOU are happy with!!:T
  • When you engage in a conversation like this you give away the power. People from Sky and any retentions team are highly trained and motivated (through bonus's) to not give up. The only way they can retain you is by talking you round.

Firstly, although I understand why you are upset - don't be (if you can). You have done nothing wrong and by the very nature of their job the Sky rep has done nothing wrong either.

    Here is what I recommend:
    - Phone up cancellations again
    - Confirm your detains when asked
    - When they ask "Why do you wish to cancel?" (or any other question after they confirm your data) respond with "I don't wish to discuss this, please cancel my account." Respond exactly the same to every question until they cancel your account.

It isn't impolite - it is the quickest and easiest way to cancel.

Respond exactly the same to every question until they cancel your account.
I'd add a few more words (as above in red).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The time to do something about what he said was right then.

HIM: If it was me, I would get your husband to put the kids first and cancel the sports to make it cheaper so they can watch Disney junior

YOU: My husband works more than 60 hours a week and Sky Sports is his only treat, I think the kids will survive without Disney, don't you?

He said something you found insensitive, it happens. It wasn't a crime or worth fussing over.

Don't make your decision based on one conversation. That would be cutting off your nose to spite your face. Think about what you actually need/can afford and do that.

I'm not sure what maternity leave has to do with the price. If all of us with kids get a couple of years at half price, that only puts up the price for everybody else. Hardly fair - Sky TV isn't exactly a necessity.
